Real Steel

I had a feeling that Real Steel was not going to be a fighting/boxing game classic. However, I thought the movie was fantastic, and sometimes a half decent movie tie in can be a good time if you have a love for the movie. What we have here is not that type of game and it is one of those games that is so bad and so frustrating that I feel you have to play it just so you can see how poorly made this game is! It is games like this that were released during this era that effectively killed off the movie tie in game!

Going For The Top

Real Steel is pretty much a movie version of Rock 'em Sock 'em Robots. In the movie, Hugh Jackman is a boxing robot trainer and is helping this kid become the best boxing robot fighter type guy around. Pretty much none of that is in the game. Instead, what we have is the most basic of boxing campaigns where you fight one opponent, go to the next, and so on with each one getting tougher and more unfair as you go.

Steel Meets Steel

Perhaps the best thing I can say about Real Steel the video game is that it looks cool. The robots have a cool design to them and I do think that they capture the vibe of the movie pretty well, all be it without technically using any actual stuff from it. Still, robots always look cool, and before a fight starts you are pretty pumped up as it looks like these two big robots are about to beat the hell out of each other and that is neat.

Another One Bites The Dust

Ok, so just before the fight, Real Steel looks decent enough for a movie tie in game. However, once the bell rings, it all pretty much goes to hell. These are big robots, but they move so slowly! I am talking, really, really slow! It makes for a very cumbersome experience. I will say that they have clearly modeled the fighting action on the Fight Night series with jabs, hooks, uppercuts, specials, and so on and the controls are easy to figure out. Yet, the game feels so sluggish and unresponsive that it is hard to get any kind of groove going.

Two Against One

The AI in this game is brutal and very, very cheap, I am pretty sure that the referee also actually works for your opponent in Real Steel! To start with, if you knock a guy down, 99/100 they make it up at one and end up having more health and are somehow stronger than when they went down. The number of times you think you have won, only for them to spring up and destroy you is crazy. Also, the amount of times the AI magically gets saved by the bell is frustrating as hell too.

The best thing that I can say about Real Steel is that after I tried for like the fifth time to get into the game and I gave up, it made me want to go and watch the movie again. I can tell you the movie holds up very well and is still a great deal of fun. Anyway, this game is one of the worst movie tie in games that I have ever played, so bad that you have to check it out just to see how bad it is. I cannot think of another fighting/boxing game that has AI that is as unfair as what you will experience here!

Pros:

  • The movie is great
  • Hugh Jackman is in the movie and that is cool
  • Evangeline Lilly is also in the movie and she is awesome
  • Many people have forgotten that Anthony Mackie is also in the movie!

Cons:

  • The AI cheats and flat out makes the game brutal to play
  • The fighting/boxing is the most sluggish I have ever seen!

Game Reviews

If you've ever wanted to step into the ring and duke it out with giant mechanical fighters, this exciting adaptation is a decent way to do so. As an adaptation of the popular Hollywood film, Real Steel puts players in the pit of battle as they brawl through a roster of rival bots. Only one bot battler can survive in this grueling world of oil-slicked combat, so if you want to be the very best, you'll have to upgrade and maintain your rig to the best of your ability. Although the game has a few shortcomings, Real Steel is an exciting 3D fighting game that will put your fighting skills to the test.

Main Game Features

  • Create your own robot fighter
  • Multi-limb targeting system
  • Compete across five unique stages

Modes of Play

Much like in the movie that the game is based on, Real Steel puts you in the center of a dangerous but profitable underground fight scene where robots battle for supremacy. As a robot fighter manager, it's your job to craft the best battle mech and take down a list of other fighters across several stages. The game has just two modes, solo story mode and local multiplayer, much like other popular 3D fighting games like Virtua Fighter.

The story mode doesn't contain many cutscenes or dialogue, so it's up to you to create your own adventure and reasoning for the battles. However, many of the same robots from the movie are available in the game, letting you set up fantasy battles that were never seen in the film. In story mode, you must take your custom robot fighter through a predetermined list of battles, with each stage containing five fights each. Local multiplayer lets you battle with every robot in the game, and since each fighter has unique moves and strategies, it's fun to try to win a fight with each.

Gameplay

Just like in most 3D fighting games, the battling in Real Steel is an equal mix of offensive combos and smart defensive movement. Comparable to realistic boxing games like the Fight Night series, series, Real Steel lets you throw jabs, hooks, haymakers, and build your way up to powerful signature finishing moves. In the main mode of the game, you'll start off in the Underworld fight scene, where you must win a gauntlet of battles before moving onto the WRB elite battling stage. During the competition, you'll fight many familiar robots from the film, including Atom, Zeus, Midas, and more.

There's a good deal of strategy to the fights as well, since you can target various limbs of the opponent, dealing tactical damage. For example, if your foe is exceptionally quick at dodging and ducking, you can deal body damage and leg damage to try and slow them down. On the flip side, your robot will also sustain damage throughout each fight, which must be repaired properly before joining the next battle. While this gameplay idea can be slightly annoying at times, it goes a long way in adding some realism to the crazy battles.

5

Real Steel is a fighting game that should appeal to gamers who enjoy boxing titles, 3D fighters, and the concept of battling giant robots. It's an interesting idea that isn't utilized to its fullest extent here, but it's unique when compared to other games in the genre. The missing story bits and a small amount of modes might leave you wanting more, but as long as you enjoy the main fighting formula, Real Steel should keep you entertained for quite a few fights!

Pros

  • Lots of fun to custom your own fighter
  • Upgrading and repairing feels realistic
  • Awesome finishing moves

Cons

  • Controls do feel a bit weird
  • It would be nice to see more unique robots
  • Single-player mode doesn't have a great story
