SaGa Frontier Remastered as the name suggests is a remaster of the original game which was released all the way back in 1997. This is one of the more “obscure” Square games and now, Square-Enix has decided that the game needs a bit more recognition so it can be held in the same regard as some of their other popular franchises.
8 Ways To Play
A huge part of what makes SaGa Frontier Remastered a more unique kind of RPG is that rather than having one big story to experience. You actually have eight, you can pick one of seven characters and each one has their own story for you to play through. Wait, I have said seven and eight so what is the deal?
Well, this newly remastered version features the seven stories from the original game. It also adds in a new character called, Fuse. Fuse has a brand-new story that has new music, new art, and more. This alone is going to make playing this worth it for fans of the original game.
So Good, So Smooth!
The first thing that captures your eye when you check out SaGa Frontier Remastered is the incredible visuals. The leap from the 1998 original to this is just staggering. Square-Enix has managed to keep much of the style and personality of that original game, but the whole thing has been spray painted with a ton of HD paint that brings the story, characters, and locations to life like you have never seen before.
I really do like the kind of chibi-style the whole game has. Some of the stories can be quite dark, but these “cuter” looking characters manage to pull it off. As well as better visuals the game also has new cutscenes. Some of these were intended to be in the original game and were cut, so now the game is actually complete just like the way the people who made it intended.
That Classic JRPG Style
At its core, SaGa Frontier Remastered is the same JRPG that you played and loved back in 1998. It has you putting together a party and following the main character through their story. It is no trying to do anything radically new in terms of the gameplay, but this is a very well-made and fun JRPG.
This is actually way better than the original thanks to a few quality-of-life improvements that they have given the game. You can now play it at double speed if you like which is neat. For me, it is the much-improved UI and the way the text is so much easier to read that makes this a much better overall experience. Overall, if you have played a Square-Enix (well Squaresoft as they were known back in the day) JRPG before you will love the gameplay that this game has.
When people talk about the classic PlayStation RPGs, SaGa Frontier Remastered is one that very rarely gets brought up. It is a game I played back in the day, enjoyed, but kind of put it out of my memory. I think it is awesome that they have brought this back for people who enjoyed it back in the 90s. Also, for people who have never heard of this game, you are in for a real treat with this!
- It has eight different stories to play through
- I liked how each character had their own story
- The visuals are amazing and completely make the original irrelevant
- It has a new character, cutscenes, and quality of life improvements too
- The new character cannot be played as at the start of the game
- It does have many of the “older” gameplay mechanics that 90s JRPGs had
