Gameplay

Have you ever played Street Fighter III: New Generation but thought it needed more swords, then you’ve come to the right place. Samurai Shodown V Special is an arcade fighting game that offers some truly enjoyable gameplay. This is a fighting game; thus, the majority of the gameplay is spent facing another character which you are told you defeat. You will have to get to know your chosen character, learn all of their attacks, how to string combos together, and then apply that in the game as efficiently as possible.

Samurai Shodown V Special has amazing responsive gameplay that allows you to react in an instant to what is happening on screen. The tight controls and effective game design allow you to truly be the best you can be while playing, but also take away your ability to blame the game if something goes wrong.

There are a few instances where, much like in Guilty Gear, you can perform a combo so devastating that it instantly kills your enemy and you are victorious in the battle. Although these are much more difficult and require greater precision to pull off.

Visuals

The visuals of Samurai Shodown V Special can best be described as ‘perfect arcade aesthetic.’ Everything from the character designs, the use of lighting and effects, the move sets, and the unique backdrops is all expertly crafted. They manage to encapsule exactly what your memory tricks you into thinking all arcade games looked like back then, and I am here for it.

I found the visual aspect amazing, and really liked that they were not afraid to explore the gore that would accompany a bunch of crazy people swinging swords at each other. There’s something distinctly enjoyable about separating someone’s head from their shoulders in a glorious swing of your blade; lets try to ignore what that might say about me.

Story

The story of this game is pretty straight forward; a meeting of 28 warriors begins and then they agree to start a series of duels to the death. There is no greater story, no pulling of heartstrings, or greater calls to destiny. Its simply a group of people who wish to battle it out and discover who among them is the greatest, and who among them will face an honorable death on the battlefield.

Say what you like about it, but I really appreciate the simplicity that this game offers in regards to its story. It knows what its about and sticks to it. Can’t beat that.
