When popular kids show Showdown Bandit went off the air, the puppets that populated it went back into their boxes. But they didn’t stay in them. Follow the playable puppet of the Showdown Bandit himself as he travels through a freaky menagerie of spooky scenery, eccentric inhabitants and frightening enemies. For your enjoyment, I present The Showdown Bandit by Kindly Beast.

Style

The style of this game is unique, to say the least. Like Kindly Beasts former title Bendy and the Ink Machine, players step into a world not often explored by the games industry. In Bendy, it was a first person game with a vintage aesthetic and in Showdown Bandit, its puppetry. You control a puppet, or you witness one being controlled? It’s hard to tell and that’s what makes the game interesting.

You jitter along, bound by strings to explore Showdown Valley, a creepy world recreated for the old stars of the show. Your small stature dwarfed by the real world items like office chairs and tables, truly make you feel like a part of some bigger scheme. As the game follow the titular Showdown Bandit, it is clearly set in a western style mini town and the enemies are unique and fitting and that is welcome in a stylised game and I found them to be surprisingly creepy t o fight against. From zombie puppets to knitted spiders, they did really well the theme everything accordingly.

Gameplay

This game could be considered slow but I prefer to think of it as cinematic. As you traverse the world, you are reduced to a casual saunter. This causes you to feel that the enemies you encounter could catch you any second. The majority of the game has a fixed camera, meaning you observe from afar while the Bandit walks through the scene but if you pull out his gun, it moves to a tactical over the shoulder style shooter. The gun fires a cork on a string which requires you to reel it back in after firing. This is another thing that takes time and during battles, it can feel like a tense eternity to reload when the enemy is slowly creeping its way over to you.

Ambience

The ambience is key in games like this. Thrillers got to thrill. Everything from the pacing and regular jump scares to the movement speed and combat brings in a feeling of desperation. You desperately want it all to move quicker but it’s not going to move quicker and you have to deal with that. A big question that seems to be hinted to throughout the game is “who is really pulling the strings?” This question implies so much about the setting and world that there are theories abound for everyone to ponder but I’d recommend you jump in and discover it for yourself.

This game is unique on several different levels. I severely hope that more work is being done on further episodes so we can see exactly where its going.
