I am a massive Sonic fan and Sonic Advance 3 is a game I am very excited to talk about. All three of the Sonic Advance games are great in their own way and this final entry in the series really did build upon what Sega had done with the first two and it is one of the best 2D Sonic games ever made!

Eggman Is Up To No Good Again!

The story that Sega is telling here is pretty interesting. I am not saying that it is going to win any awards or anything like that, but it is cool none the less. Eggman and Germal are causing chaos and only the Sonic Team can stop them. This time Earth is divided into seven chunks and each one serves as a zone that Sonic needs to save.

Gotta Go Fast!

The presentation of Sonic Advance 3 is amazing! I think this is the best looking of the trilogy. There is just so much color and so many little details that it is sometimes a shame you are moving so fast as it is easy to miss the little details. It is not just the levels, but the characters as well which look fantastic. Sega really did a great job here and the game looks so good that you know there is no way that this game could have existed on the 16-bit hardware of the Mega Drive! This feels like a next-generation 2D Sonic game before that was a thing.

Two Become One!

Sega had been trying to force teams of Sonic characters on us since Chaotix! I feel that with Sonic Advance 3 they got it right. The game starts by having you play as either Sonic or Tails. You pick one and the other is your ally. They follow you around and by pressing R you can use their special ability. Each character in this game has a special ability. Sonic can do this zoom attack, Tails can fly, Amy can use her hammer and so on.

Did I say that Amy can use her hammer? Well, that is because as well as Sonic and Tails, Amy, Knuckles, and Cream are in the gang here. You unlock the other three characters as you play and I like how Sega made each one feels special. Using your partner's special abilities is not just fun, but also feels useful. The core gameplay is what you would expect. It is fast and fun and very frantic. You have seven different zones and each one has three acts as well as a boss battle. It is a stacked Sonic game and a damn fine one at that.

As you have probably guessed, Sonic Advance 3 is a game that I really do like. It is my favorite of the Sonic Advance trilogy and it is one of my all-time favorite Sonic games. It is just so much fun to play and I feel that Sega really nailed the team-up aspect here. It is fun without being a chore or feeling too forced. If you like 2D Sonic the Hedgehog, you have to give this a try.

Final Score: 9/10

Pros:

  • Five playable characters
  • The team-up aspect of the game is fun
  • I like how each character has their own ability
  • Fast and fun gameplay
  • It looks great and the soundtrack rocks!

Cons:

  • Maybe a couple of extra characters would have been nice
  • It is so good that I wish there was a few more zones
