Take control of a small party of mages and travel the lands in Spire and Sorcery. This game has players lead mages through the dangerous world as they learn and gain new magics, spellcasting and alchemical knowledge. The group will falter at times, occasionally some members of the party will die, then it is time to bury your dead, pick yourselves back up and keep moving forward. In an adaptive game that teaching players to persevere through all odds, it’s up to you to bring about a new age of magic and change the world in the ways you see fit.
Gameplay
In a top-down tabletop style formula, this strategy RPG has players create their path across the world. The world is chock-full of adventure, quests to complete, resources to find and stories to uncover, its up to you to figure out where they all are and how to get/complete them.
Once of the biggest parts of the game is the combat system. Basic combat has three phases to it, first the environment takes a turn, then the wizards take a turn and finally the enemies take a turn. The environment can attack the players in various ways, maybe lightning strikes if you’re fighting in a storm, maybe a tunnel collapses when you’re fighting in a cave, maybe a flash flood, its all up to players to figure out.
I will warn you ahead of time that the user interface to this title is very busy, there are a significant amount of meters relating to different damage types that you need to keep an eye, and these vary for each character. Meaning some may be weaker to some damage types than other. The spell list is also something that takes a little getting used to. I’ll be honest, I don’t think I can explain it very well without you just playing it so I think that would be best.
Story
The story of the game is simple enough. You and a group of mages escape a tower known as the Spire, the Spire houses all the other mages who have been captured. A small team manage to escape and must save the rest as they progress on their journey.
Art Style
The art style in this title is very reminiscent of the old flash games you’d find on Newgrounds or something but with a higher budget. It’s got that Eador. Imperium vibe with a dash of Gremlins, Inc. which looks kind of rough but charming.
A unique style that conveys a lot of information on screen but also doesn’t overdo it, its selective with color and form. I quite enjoyed everything I was looking at.
If you love a strategy game that you can really sink your teeth into then this is the one for you. Just take it slow and follow the instructions.
