Nintendo is bringing us together to party up once again with the latest exciting addition to everyone’s favorite friendship-crushing game, Super Mario Party Jamboree. Making its way into the extensive Nintendo Switch library of colorful games, this party brings a new twist to a formula that has kept players coming back for more time and time again over the years.

Party like it's 1999, but better

Basically, Super Mario Party Jamboree is about what works: some friends hanging around a virtual board, playing absurd mini-games with one another as they collect stars on the path to victory. However, it is by no means a rehash. This installment packs more than 110 mini-games, many within the series' single-game history. It is a mixture from frantic button-mashing contests to brain-teasers-somethings that every kind of player will enjoy.

The new boards are a visual treat set on a paradisiacal island, second only to the tropical getaway and Mushroom Kingdom madness. Every turn is replete with its own portion of surprises, hidden paths, and mischievous events to keep players guessing, but there is always the threat of Bowser's shenanigans large.

Jamming with New Ideas

Where Super Mario Party Jamboree really steps up, though, is with its new Jamboree Mode, rethinking the old formula with team-based challenges and cooperative play that really lets some fresh air into this series. In fact, players can cooperate in ways they have not previously done in a Mario Party game, introducing an element of strategy beyond simply racing towards the finish line.

Mario Party Superstars in 2021 felt like a necessary shot straight into the vein of nostalgia, while Jamboree is all about pushing it. This feels far more complete with its new set of modes and expanded minigame roster, even if the most die-hard fans of the classic style may find themselves pining for simpler times.

The other big standout is the online Koopathlon mode, which lets up to 20 players in for some special mini-games and challenges to enjoy together. Chaotic fun that embodies everything good about an IRL party, from hardcore competition and sore losers to last-second comebacks.

Super Mario Party Jamboree is a vibrant, joyous celebration of everything that makes the series great. The enhanced graphics and sound design bring the Mushroom Kingdom to life like never before, while the expanded roster of playable characters ensures everyone can find their perfect digital avatar.

It's not without its flaws. Some minigames feel unbalanced, particularly in asymmetrical matchups. And while the new boards are beautifully designed, players might find themselves wishing for more variety after extended play sessions.

Despite these minor gripes, Super Mario Party Jamboree stands tall as a worthy addition to the series. It successfully walks the tightrope between honoring tradition and embracing innovation, resulting in a party game that's sure to be a hit at gatherings for years to come.
