Part visual novel and part action RPG, Sword Art Online: Alicization Lycoris is an interesting direction for the series. I have enjoyed the anime over the years and more than dabbled in a few of the games. This was actually gifted to me by a friend during lockdown so I did spend quite a bit of time with it. The thing is the game is trying to appeal to both fans of the anime and those who perhaps are not, but think this looks like a cool game.
Knowing Your Audience
The story that Sword Art Online: Alicization Lycoris is trying to tell should be good. On one hand, it follows the anime quite well, Kirito is stuck in this place called The Underworld and he needs to try and find a way out. The thing is the story is all over the place!
It cuts a ton of content, but at the same time it drags stuff on that is not interesting or all that important. In trying to appease both fans and non-fans, I feel that most people who play this will feel kind of confused. It is a real shame too because sometimes the storytelling is really good.
There is a lot and I mean a lot of reading in Sword Art Online: Alicization Lycoris. That is why I said it was part visual novel, you can have a good 20 plus minutes of reading in-between actual gameplay. I really think that this game would have benefited greatly from an English VO track. It perhaps would have made it less of a chore to get through. I would love to know the exact amount of time I spend reading the story compared to actually playing the game.
Whoa, This Is Actually Really Good
The thing is the combat in Sword Art Online: Alicization Lycoris is actually a great deal of fun. It plays like a hack and slash style of action RPG. It is all about being quick paced and trying to think a few moves ahead. You can also dish out commands to your allies too. It feels great it really does; I just wish that the time between the action areas was not so tedious. You have a blast taking on a boss or some kind of action sequence and then the fun is broken up by the visual novel type stuff.
One area that the game does succeed is the presentation. It is very faithful to the anime and I think that Sword Art Online: Alicization Lycoris is a great representation of the series as far as the visuals go. All of your favorite characters look just like they should and there is a very decent variety to the different areas that you will be visiting. I know I already said this, but English voice acting would have really made it so much better. I get that some people like the authenticity of the Japanese voice acting and I am usually there with you, but with the way this game is designed it is actually a bit of a downfall.
I really enjoy this series, but I have to say that Sword Art Online: Alicization Lycoris was a disappointing game. I felt like I was spending far too long waiting to get back into the game, plus some of the save points are way too spread out.
The combat is fantastic and during those segments, I was having a blast. So much so that it was the combat that made me stick with the visual novel style parts.
