Lovecraftian horror is a favorite for many gamers as its surrealistic nature is just perfect for getting lost in incredible settings. That is why independent developer Alessandro Guzzo has announced his new Lovecraftian horror game The Alien Cube, to be released on October 14th for Steam only. This new adventure and experience aim to take the player for a survival experience in a special way. But what is it about and what makes it special? Well, let's talk about it.
About the game
In this first-person, cosmic horror, adventure game the player takes the role of Arthur, a lonesome man, whose life is about to drastically change after the disturbing disappearance of his uncle, Edgar. The world he lives in is intertwined with a different, secret, and obscure reality in which his uncle seems to have played an important role.
Tormented by the nightmare-like visions, you’ll have to set on a journey to find the truth and survive the darkness that haunts you.
A survival experience
There are many things you have to endure if you want to survive, from dark and cold woods to the forgotten dungeons, and all kinds of odd and bizarre environments. Get completely submerged in the twisted world and find the truth.
The beautiful ambiance and level design are crafted amazingly, and they are completed by the fine-tuning of the ambient sound, and the atmospheric soundtrack that's pretty much taken directly from the abyss this game takes place in. The CryEngine 5 behind the visuals of the game really stands out, and it's incredible to think that this is such an individual piece of work.
If the character rings a bell to you it's alright, it is the main character from a past game called The Land of Pain, and now we'll get to see more development. And the complex connection that lies behind these two games. The Lovecraftian horror and the survival in this game are sure to keep you thrilled but at the edge of your seat for most of the experience.
The Alien Cube is a great survival experience, and it is one that really does a great job at recreating the Lovecraftian horror. But it’s not just the horror that’s present here, but also the worldbuilding and narrative, everything from the way the game looks to how it feels, is a direct representation of the Lovecraftian mythos.
However, the game does feel a little underdeveloped, and small overall. Even though there are so many beautiful worlds and environments, it still feels incomplete. But we can ignore this a little by letting ourselves go with the flow and enjoy the experience, while it lasts. The game is also a little short, but it's still worth playing.
It’s not that easy to nail the visuals and the narrative this well by one developer, but he did an incredible job. Could use some improvement, but it’s an immersive experience nonetheless.
Pros:
- Great for Lovecraftian fans
- Beautiful visuals
- Nice art
- Interesting story
Cons:
- A little boring
- Short
- Slow paced
