We live in a golden age of horror games and one that I feel deserves more attention is The Chant. This is a survival horror game that I have had on pre-order for a while now and I am ashamed to admit that I forgot all about it until I got an email about it recently. I wanted to try and get the word out there about this game and hopefully get more people interested in this. this is a single-player adventure so it has a strong narrative and that is one of the things that made me very interested in this game when I saw the initial trailer a while back.

Not The Spiritual Retreat I Was Expecting

I have to say that I love the setting of The Chant. We play as a character that has gone to this spiritual retreat on a secluded island to try and get better. Well, a chant opens up a doorway to The Gloom. The Gloom is a dimension of pure terror that feeds off negative energy and now this force is unleashed on the island. You need to fight in order to survive and hopefully find the cult on the island so you can figure out how to close this doorway. As a guy that loves horror movies, I think the tale being told here is pretty awesome and something that has many twists and turns.

The Island Of Resources!

As The Chant is a survival horror game, exploration is a massive part of what you will be doing in this game. I think that the island is a great size, not too large that it becomes overwhelming, but there are still plenty of interesting areas for you to explore. Gathering resources is a huge part of what you will be doing here. There will be many times when you are really scavenging to find something to help you heal, give you a fighting chance, or something else.

Embracing Your Spirituality!

As we have opened a door to a spiritual world and the fact that this is taking place on a spiritual retreat. You do get the chance to dabble in the supernatural yourself. The Chant allows you to embrace the supernatural which can help you when it comes to combat against the horrific creatures that have been unleased as well as in the general way you explore the island. I think that this is a very nice touch and it adds that extra bit of specialness to the game.

Going Alone

I for one am happy that The Chant is a single-player experience as it means the game can be much more story based than if it had some forced multiplayer. I know that some people have really gotten into horror games that are multiplayer these days, but for me, I think that this style of game is much better when you are all alone and survival is down to you and you alone.

I know that we have had some cool horror style games in 2022, probably most notably The Quarry and the final installment in The Dark Pictures Anthology. However, if you ask me, The Chant more than deserves to be in the conversation for the best horror game of the year. They have crafted a very interesting story here with this game and while I am not sure the game being so story driven will lead to it being something with a great amount of replay value. I am certain that most people will be thoroughly entertained when they are playing this.

Pros:

The story in this game is fantastic!
We get to meet some pretty interesting characters here
The survival gameplay is a lot of fun and makes things tense
I like how this is a single-player experience

Cons:

I like it being a single-player game, but I can see why some may wish there were multiplayer
I am not sure how much replay value a game like this will offer
