The Gap

As soon as I read the description of what The Gap was all about, I knew that this was a game that would be for me. It is funny how some games require that you watch multiple trailers and read many different articles before you decide it is worth your time. On the flip side of that, we have games where just seconds into their reveal we know that they are for us! This is a narrative driven first-person game that is all about the story and finding out the truth!

A Rare Genetic Disease

I think that the premise of The Gap is great as it is just so perfect for a video game. Our main character and “hero” is a man called Joshua who is a neuroscientist. The thing is, Joshua's family has a strange history of this neurological disease that eats away at their memories and basically leads to them becoming mad and losing what makes them special. It sounds like a horrific experience, but Joshua thinks that he may be able to break this cycle and this disease that has had a hold on his family.

A Gap Of Light In The Dark

As you would expect, Joshua is pretty desperate to try and find a way out of this hell that is coming his way. The Gap then throws Joshua a bone in the form of the corporation, Neuraxis which is a biotech giant. They claim to have a way for a person to dive into their memories, both good and bad and this could be just what is needed to try and find a cure for this horrible disease once and for all! This sounds awesome as there is a twist where as Joshua is diving into his memories, he is not sure what he is doing is right or even if he can actually trust himself.

Remember Me?

Granted that as I write this, The Gap has not been finished so I cannot say how this is all going to play out, but the premise and the setup is absolutely fantastic and I could not be any more invested in the story of Joshua and what he is going through. Now, I have to say that I think a huge part of the appeal for this game for me is that it is bringing back memories of movies, games, and shows that use memory loss as a story device. The two that come to my mind are Memento and Paycheck, two great thrillers and that is a similar kind of vibe to what I am getting with this game here.

The Furthest Reaches Of Your Mind!

As you dive into Joshua's memories, you will have to find items, solve puzzles, and try to piece together things, and discover what is really going on. The part in the trailer where you get what seemed to me was like a warning from yourself sent shivers down my spine! It is this kind of thing that I just love and I cannot wait to unravel this mystery. Of course, a big setup like this always has the chance to be disappointing with the payoff, but we will have to wait until the game is completed. However, I will say that from what I have seen so far, it looks like these guys know exactly what they are doing with the story being told here.

If you love narrative driven mystery thriller type stories in your video games, The Gap is one that you have to take a closer look at. This is a game that is just ringing every bell that I have. I am so invested in what is going on here that I have made the decision to not watch any more videos or read anything else about the game until I have had the chance to play it as I do not want anything spoiled.

Pros:

  • This has all the makings of a great mystery thriller
  • There is puzzle like gameplay
  • The first-person view makes it more immersive
  • I love the whole idea of this game

Cons:

  • Will the story be hard to follow?
  • I am not sure how much replay value a game like this has
