Most farming simulators take place in the same type of area. It’s typically a plot of land or field that looks like it could be in the American Midwest. Seasons change, but the general surroundings are always the same without much variation. With so many games in the genre all taking place in the same kind of area, farming games can begin to get a little samey and uninteresting outside of their core gameplay mechanics. It’s rare that a game seeks to buck that trend and go its own way, taking place in a unique setting and taking on all that means for the gameplay and mechanics. One game that is brave enough to do this is called The Islander. Developed and published by Boxhead Bros., The Islander is a unique farming simulator that takes place in an island paradise instead of the same type of land as other games in the genre. This makes The Islander stand out, and if you’re looking for an interesting farming simulator with a unique setting and mechanics, then here is everything you need to know.
A Unique Setting
The Islander takes place on an island somewhere in Polynesia, an exotic collection of islands in the southern Pacific Ocean. This setting gives new life to the farming simulator genre, as there aren’t many farming simulators that take place in an island paradise. You won’t find any island farms in Stardew Valley. Before you set out to build your farm, you can first choose to either design your own island or have the game randomly generate one for you. This option gives you much more control over the possible layout of your farm, especially if you kind of have an idea of how you want it to look in your head. You can custom design your island to fit your exact desire.
Your Very Own Farm
After you design your island and start the layout of your farm, the game completely opens up to you. You can select and plant crops, gather livestock and build pens for them, and even plant bushes and trees to spruce up your little farm in paradise. To maintain the spirit and culture of Polynesia, you can buy and set out decorations that represent the people of those many coveted islands.
With your crops planted, livestock happy, and island decorated, you can begin to reap the rewards of all of your hard work. You can harvest your crops and collect resources manually, going to each crop and meticulously collecting all of their goods, or you can summon your autonomous companion Cocobot to do it for you. Selling your goods will earn you money and experience points, both of which you can use to purchase upgrades and unlock new things to plant and raise. You’ll continue to unlock things until you’ve maximized your island’s potential, at which point you can save it and start a brand new island using everything you learned from the previous one.
