Some games deliver the smallest paragraphs of history into a brilliant art form. It's quite a rare feat where trivial aspects of society in an environment can be melded into satisfying gameplay. Paintbucket Games have done just that, however, with their indie offering - Through the Darkest of Times.
The name itself is a decent representation of what theme underlines the game's basis - it is a story about Nazi Germany. Most games that take on this theme are often shooters or some kind of action genre that enable the player to charge in and find a plethora of ways to kill your fascist foes. 'Through the Darkest of Times' is a very different take on this part of history.
Historical Fiction Priding Itself on Accuracy
'Through the Darkest of Times' focuses on a small resistance group living through Nazi Germany conducting operations to sabotage and hinder the ruling fascist party. The strategy-based game has the player take control of the anti-Nazi group. You'll recruit other like-minded citizens with varying social backgrounds.
The core mechanics resemble a strategy where you are encouraged to use your recruits to plan, manage, and execute operations. You'll use resistance members to the best of their abilities to perpetuate the downfall of Hitler and his cronies. In between operations - you'll be presented with newspapers that serve as nodes for progression and be given choices on how to act on isolated events within daily life. Everything impacts 'morale,' which serves as the game's life meter - if morale sinks to zero, it's all over. The most striking thing about the game is how ingrained the story is in Nazi German life. The game feels basic on the surface, especially with its pen and paper art style, but is stunningly intricate in function under the engines. Through the Darkest of Times stays loyal to history, in that nothing your resistance group does change the timeline of Nazi Germany. Instead, it focuses on how you impact the lives of other citizens through your actions.
A Very Different Nazi Game
For the first time in recent memory, this anti-Nazi based game does not encourage you to burst into the streets of Berlin, all guns flailing. Quite the opposite, actually. Doing anything of the sort will be instantly met with authoritative action and the end of your resistance. Instead, your approach comes through managing your maps conducting small-scale operations that can boost your standing in the timeline.
The concept and execution are quite refreshing and a very admirable way to deliver a new historical experience that gives insight into the social aspects of fascist life. The game itself has reminiscence in 'Papers, Please' with theme and choice, yet managed almost like the Mother Base operations in Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker.
Through the Darkest of Times is an extremely engaging indie experience and a game worth playing in all regards. The deterrence factors are those looking to slaughter all Nazi's with heavy weaponry and machinery. That is not going to happen here. If you are looking for a game to have your coffee over, this suits you in the highest regard.
