If bullet hell shooters are your jam, Touhou Hero of Ice Fairy is a game that you need to check out. However, before you do that, I suggest you check out the demo/prologue so you can get an idea of what this game is all about. It has a very cool style to it and it features some of the most frantic bullet hell shooter style action I have seen this year! I have had a blast with what I have played so far and this is a game (especially as it has that free prologue) that could not be any easier for me to recommend.

Saving The Princess

Ok, I will admit that I am pretty ignorant as to what Touhou Hero of Ice Fairy is based on, it is some kind of fan game, but I am sure stuff like Cotton and Deathsmiles has to be an inspiration for what is going on here. The story is very lighthearted and not meant to be taken too seriously and the game is basically about you playing as a feisty little fairy like character as you try and save your princess!

One Boss At A Time

I would say that the core gameplay of Touhou Hero of Ice Fairy is best described as a bullet hell boss rush kind of shooter. You have to take down these awesome looking enemies that have a ton of personality to them. The game puts on one hell of a show, so you have to keep your wits about you as you try to dodge the enemy’s immense amount of projectiles all the while dealing out as much damage as you can yourself. It is fun and intense stuff and the kind of game where you have to get into a zen-like state in order to be really good at it.

Your Build, Your Way

The core gameplay of Touhou Hero of Ice Fairy is something that is a great deal of fun. Do not get me wrong, this game is hard as hell as a good bullet hell shooter should be. However, there are a few ways that you can give yourself a bit of a helping hand. You get to build your own custom build before each round and the way that you do this is with cards. You have spell cards and you can equip up to three of these and these are the attacks you will use. You also have access to items of which you can have four and these can do stuff like make your attacks larger, do more damage, and so on.

Saturday At 8 AM!

The whole presentation of the game is something that I am a huge fan of. Touhou Hero of Ice Fairy has this very animated, Saturday morning cartoon kind of style to it and it is something that makes playing the game even more appealing. It moves at a blistering pace too which is awesome. There is a ton of stuff going on and even the enemy attacks have a great look to them which can make you get lost in them! It is such a nice-looking game, that even when you die, you may die with a smile on your face.

I have played many bullet hell shooters over the years and with this one having a bit of Cotton and Deathsmiles about it, it is a game that appeals to me in many ways. Touhou Hero of Ice Fairy is going to challenge you that is for sure, it is a bullet hell shooter after all. However, I feel like the fun factor here by far outweighs the frustration one. Be sure to give the free prologue game a try and you will see why I and many other people are so high on this game.
