If you like your adventure games to really push you and force you to think deeply, then you might enjoy What Remains of Edith Finch. This game was released to positive fanfare when it was released in 2017, with developer Giant Sparrow really going the extra mile to make an adventure game that forces you to think. Though well-received at the time and still enjoyed today, is What Remains of Edith Finch the right choice for you?
An intriguing mystery for thrill seekers
The game itself puts you in the role of Edith Finch herself. Returning home to see her family on coastal Washington, she finds a whole lot about her relatives and their deaths. She visits their bedrooms and areas around the home, including shrines that are dedicated to their memory. You get to see each character death play out in a well-narrated little cutscene. Unlike other adventure games, the quality here stems from the emotional payoff that comes from following the story closely. As opposed to massive set pieces, What Remains of Edith Finch offers something a bit more bombastic. Paired with a dramatic re-telling of the story, you get to learn about the fate of the Finch family through a wonderfully narrated game.
A true example of artistic video gaming (9/10)
While some might scoff at the idea of video games being a medium of art, What Remains of Edith Finch fights back against that. Artist Brandon Martynowicz and writer Ian Dallas have created a highly enjoyable experience. It pushes on the senses, forces you to learn a really engaging story, and really puts you in a position where you want to find out more about each of the people involved.
For that reason, you might just find that this game provides you with that perfect dose of gaming enjoyment. A fun, satisfying experience that is sure to have you engaged from start ‘til finish. The story itself is emotional, evocative, and sure to give you a little tug on the heartstrings. Some feel that the game lacks the quality and length of comparative games like Firewatch and Gone Home, but it’s still a very enjoyable and satisfying experience.
The story is quite unhappy, though, so don’t expect to come out of this one with a sense of upbeat optimism. It’s a story that leaves you pretty solemn at the end for the most part, but it’s the kind of intense, emotional story that you will likely feel pretty happy that you went through in the end. It’s a good choice for those who want a game that is pretty minimalistic on the actual player input, instead focusing on simply telling a cracking story.
Pros:
- Wonderful story and artistic detail paired with great writing
- Really strong, emotional story that should provide a great tale to tell
- Full of some of the best writing and art detail you’ll find in an indie title
Cons:
- Perhaps lacks the length that some would have hoped for
