Adventure Time: The Secret of the Nameless Kingdom is a fantasy adventure game and an adaptation of the popular cartoon of the same name. Featuring the heroic human Finn and his beloved dog Jake, Adventure Time chronicles the pair's wacky and often humorous antics. In The Secret of the Nameless Kingdom, these adventurers must battle their way through a mysterious land all while trying to rescue beautiful princesses. In classic Adventure Time fashion, the game is packed with wacky characters, colorful visuals, and silly objectives. Similar in style to classic adventure games like The The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past, this retro-inspired quest will have you solving puzzles, finding new weapons, and ultimately saving the day!
Main Game Features
- Top-down, classic adventure gameplay
- Large map to explore with 4 regions
- Puzzle-filled dungeons
Story
The story in Adventure Time: The Secret of the Nameless Kingdom begins with Jake and Finn exploring a dungeon in the eponymous Nameless Kingdom. Sent to the mysterious land by Princess Bubblegum, the eccentric pair of heroes must rescue three kidnapped princesses before the crowning of a new queen.
With little else to go on, Jake and Finn venture into the vast Nameless Kingdom, searching for the princesses hidden deep within ancient temples. During the journey, you'll also encounter tons of characters from the Adventure Time show, including Cinnamon Bun, Magic Man, Lumpy Space Princess, and more. In order to find every princess, you'll need to travel through the Kingdom's various regions, battling the deadly creatures and hazards you find.
Gameplay
In terms of control and combat, The Secret of the Nameless Kingdom feels very similar to the previous Adventure Time game, Explore the Dungeon Because I Don't Know! Players control Finn from a top-down view and must explore the map, investigating various towns, shops, and dungeons along the way. Your quest to retrieve the princesses involves lots of item-trading, which involves discovering unique goodies to give to other characters. After some time exploring, you'll stumble upon one of the three major temples, which house your main objective.
Much like in The Legend Of Zelda, temples are filled with puzzles, enemies, and traps, requiring you to think fast and react to all manners of danger. Finn has a sword to attack with and can use Jake to block, but your offensive options are limited. As you finish temples and quests, you'll unlock new abilities and items which can be utilized in both exploration and combat. This includes bombs to blow up walls, ranged weapons for hitting switches, and even bonus abilities for Jake to use. As you expand your arsenal and explore the further reaches of the map, you'll become a courageous and talented hero!
Conclusion
If you enjoy the Adventure Time cartoon, you'll likely be pleased with what The Secret of the Nameless Kingdom has to offer. This is also true for fans of the classic Legend of Zelda games, or old-school adventure titles in general. Although there aren't a ton of new ideas on display, Adventure Time: The Secret of the Nameless Kingdom succeeds in both paying homage to other great games and giving players a satisfying adventure of its own. Although the exploration can be a bit frustrating at times, there's more than enough action to keep you engaged.
Overall, The Secret of the Nameless Kingdom is comfortable and familiar, giving players a retro-style adventure with a fun, cartoon atmosphere.
