Simulator games have been gaining some unexpected popularity recently: just take a look at how big the 2020 release of Microsoft Flight Simulator was. This genre (traditionally seen as a PC exclusive thing) has been making waves on the console market, and that’s where Autobahn Police Simulator 2 comes into play.
If you’re not familiar with what the Autobahn is, it’s enough to say that it’s Germany’s busiest highway system. If you’ve played other simulator games before – like the ever so popular Euro Truck Simulator 2 – then you must already be familiar with this game’s setting. This time, however, you’re tasked with upholding the law on the highway, keeping your eyes peeled for any potential ne'er-do-wells.
All in a day’s work
Before you begin patrolling the Autobahn, you must first create your custom character. Unlike the first game in the series, customization in Autobahn Police Simulator 2 lets you much more in control of how your character looks. That said, you won’t be seeing your character all that much, considering that most of the time you play the game you’ll be behind the wheel of your trusty patrol car.
Once you have created your character, you’re free to tackle any of the game’s random missions. These tasks involve anything from simple traffic checks to exhilarating high-speed chases.
Autobahn Police Simulator 2 does a serviceable job making you feel like you’re a real officer, with all of its ups and downs. Time spent between missions can be used to develop your police station, but sometimes, you can’t help but feel like the actual content of the game feels a bit scarce.
Free play or story mode
If the game’s free mode leaves you wishing there was a more narrative-based mode available, then you’re in luck. This time around, developers Z-Software have included an engrossing story mode that’s definitely one of the stars of the show.
The game features 20 missions in its story mode. Between these missions, you get some passable cutscenes that give you a gist of what’s happening. Giving the cutscenes voice acting was a nice touch, even though the voice acting feels as stiff as the character models at times.
Potholes in the Autobahn
Z-Software seems to have listened to feedback regarding the sketchy driving controls of the first game. In this game, driving feels more responsive, with some tiny caveats. If you’re playing the game with a controller, you might have to tune some of the game’s settings, as using joysticks to control the car feels overly sensitive.
That said, one of the game’s worst aspects is its performance. Even though you’ll be driving at top speed in many instances during gameplay, the FPS can hardly keep up the pace.
This choppiness can render the game nearly unplayable at times, as it feels more like you’re watching a PowerPoint presentation about German police than playing a videogame.
Autobahn Police Simulator 2 is an improvement over its predecessor, even though the game still feels like it caters to a very niche market. The inclusion of a more linear story mode will keep players entertained and with a clear sense of progression, sadly, the negative aspects of the game’s engine sour the overall experience. All in all, we can recommend this game only if you’re a diehard fan of simulation games.
