For fans of fighting games and the anime Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball Z: Extreme Butoden is an enjoyable game where you play with over one hundred characters and use them in either one-on-one fights or team battles. As in most fighting games, to come out as the winner, you must completely deplete your opponent's health bar or have more health by the time the clock runs out. You can play with all of your favorite characters and simply battle enemies, or you can go and play through the story.
Saiyan Spirit
Dragon Ball Z: Extreme Butoden is a 2D fighting game, and there are more than one hundred fighters for you to use and fight. Each character has a unique move set and skills, and you also perform all types of combos by combining weak, strong, and special attacks. And to be able to use special attacks, you need to charge your spirit gauge. Combat can take place on the ground, but by using a meteor attack and launching your opponent into the air, the battle will then take place in the air. Also, each character has two different special attacks, blitz attack and burst attack. The blitz attack consumes 25% of your spirit gauge, and the burst attack consumes 50% of the gauge. When characters have 50% health, they will enter an awakened state that allows them to charge their spirit gauge up to 200% percent, and they can also use their final ultimate combo.
During this awakened state, fighters can also perform a burst attack that will push opponents away, and you can also use the dragon's soul, a transformation that will slowly drain your HP but, in return, will boost your attack power. This transformation will revert when your HP is on 1%, so be sure to use this transformation wisely, and make use of the boost to try and quickly defeat your opponent. The controls are similar to other fighting games, so if you have ever played any other 2D fighting games like Dragon Ball Z, you will feel right at home with this game.
Prove Yourself
There are, in total, seven-game modes for you to play. In Z story mode, you get to relieve the most important battles from the anime, and it goes all the way to the kid buu saga, and there are also what-if scenarios where you get to play as the villains. There is also adventure mode, which tells the game's main story, and it can only be unlocked after completing all scenarios in Z story mode. In extreme tournament mode, you create your team and fight other CPU-controlled teams to see who will become the champion. There is also an extreme survival mode, a battle mode versus mode, and a quest mode.
Conclusion
Dragon Ball Z: Extreme Butoden is a fun fighting game. Even though it is seven years old, the game still offers some pretty fun gameplay, and the combat is very flashy and exciting.
While it does not compare to most recent fighting games, if you have a 3ds, it is a great way to kill some time and have fun.
