While it was not “amazing” I did like the original game so Dusk Diver 2 has been something I have been looking forward to for a few months now. The action RPG is back and it is building on what the first game did and is fleshing things out far more. That first game was met with mediocre reviews, but from what I have seen so far, many of the “issues” that people had with that original look to have been addressed here with this awesome looking sequel that is coming to the Nintendo Switch, PC and PlayStation 4.
A College Girl Just Trying To Move On
Dusk Diver 2 is a direct sequel to the first game. Our heroine, Yang Yumo saved the day in the first game, she fixed the dimensions and sent those beasts packing! Now she is a college student just trying to live her life, but what went down has left its mark on her. One day she gets a message that a Chaos Beast has appeared and she is called into action once again. From the sounds of it, you will need to have played the original game to get the best out of the story here.
A Larger Game World
I liked the Japanese town of Ximending from the first game, but Dusk Diver 2 is offering more than that this time around. As well as Ximending, you can also go to Taipei City as well. There will be real life stores in the game for you to go into and get items too which is cool. It is like they took what they did in the first game and expanded upon it and that is something I am very happy to see.
So, No One Told You Life Was Gonna Be This Way!
Friends reference, get it? As well as Yang Yumo, we also have other characters to play as in Dusk Diver 2. In the first game, you had allies that assisted you in the story, but now they are actually playable. You can swap people in to play with you and each character has a different play style so messing around and experimenting with each character is going to be something that I think is a great deal of fun. The hack and slash and fast-paced combat system have returned which is great as I found that to be a lot of fun. There will be more side quests a cool combo system and much more too.
The visuals of Dusk Diver 2 may not blow you away or anything like that, but I still think there is an appeal here. If someone told me that this was based on some kind of obscure anime I would believe them as that is the kind of style the game has. It also has a funky soundtrack and some fantastic voice acting too, featuring a very talented Japanese voice cast.
I get that the first game was not the greatest JRPG around, but it certainly had its moments. I have the Nintendo Switch version and I actually had a lot of fun with it. It is a solid action JRPG and one I feel more people should have given a chance. I do feel that the sequel here looks to be bigger and better in every way so perhaps this is the way to go. However, you might not be as attached to the story if you do not play the original game first.
- You can play as different characters this time around
- I like the bright and colorful anime style visuals
- The gameplay has a lot more to it than the previous game
- The game world is much larger and there is more to do
- Will the story make no sense if you have not played the first?
- While I found it fun, some might find the hack and slash combat tiresome after a while
