Koei once again delivers a half sequel of their Dynasty Warrior series with Dynasty Warriors 4 Xtreme Legends. As it's now usual this Xtreme Legends title of the Dynasty Warriors 4 title is another expansion to the original game. That being said this time they added more than in Dynasty Warriors 3 Xtreme Legends and made it more playable on its own without the need of the original game.

Since Dynasty Warriors 4 is arguably one of the best games in the genre available for the PS2, the Xtreme Legends had a big responsibility to make something of the same level. So, let’s talk about it and see if they managed to deliver to the expectation.

Living up to the expectation

The issue with the Dynasty Warriors Xtreme Legends entries is that they can't be sequels nor entire games, but they have to add enough content to make it worth buying. So starting on the basics, they've tweaked and changed some small details and mechanics from the original game. But to play most of those, you'll also need to have the original game, so that's not saying much. so, what's changed?

More Xtreme?

Well, there are some aspects where this game is more extreme than the original title, but it's not a completely new game as you already know, and that limits the amount of new content possible. So, as far as the graphics and the visuals go, there are no updates or upgrades, the game looks exactly the same as it does on the normal version. However, there are some new animations, videos, enemies, and even new clothing, so there are some added elements.

All the same sound effects and musical pieces from the original game are still here. And while they added new themes and effects they are perfectly matched with the same style already present in the game. This works excellently to add a new feeling to the game but in the same style.

Now, we know that as in every other Xtreme Legends title, they added the two game modes once again. It adds over 40 new missions to the game, new unlockables, and newer stuff to the main game.

A stand-alone?

One thing that you always have to consider with these games is if it's really worth buying it, or should you just stick to the original game. And well, in this case, it is certainly worth buying, you really get a lot of new content, enough to make it almost a stand-alone title. The Xtreme and Challenge mode adds a lot of hours to the game and even more replayability. So it's always nice to see how a great game is made even better.

Dynasty Warriors 4 Xtreme Legends is a pretty interesting title, however, if you consider that most of what makes this game great is from the original game. However, even with that, it's still a great game, and since the original game is already one of the best action games for the console, well, there you go. It's a great game and an even better addition to the original title, so there's that. It's a must-play for the fans of the genre and even more for the followers of the series.
