During the days of the Wii, Epic Mickey, I kid you not was one of the most anticipated games for that console for me. I was so excited for this and it is one of the key exclusive titles for the Wii that has never been ported to another system. Look, this game is not perfect, far from it, but I had a lot of fun with this game and I still think that it is one of the more unique and memorable titles from the Wii. I recently played through the game for the first time in many years and I have to say, it is still pretty good.

Welcome To Wasteland

One of the best things that Epic Mickey has going for it is the story. The wizard Yen Sid has created this wasteland where old things like old Disney characters can live. It is here that we meet Oswald the Lucky Rabbit and soon realize that this dark and twisted place is not what it seems. Look, this is a fun Mickey as a hero style story and it is pretty awesome stuff. I think that the sequel has a much better story, but I was still entertained by what I experienced here.

Living On The Edge

Epic Mickey is an action platformer where you control Mickey Mouse and his magic paintbrush. The paintbrush is used to fight enemies, you can either paint them or use thinner on them. Paint and thinner are used to solve puzzles in the game as well. Sometimes you may need to paint something to make something appear, other times you may have to use thinner in order to take away something. It makes for some fun and tricky puzzle platforming sections that I think were rather groundbreaking for their time and even today there is a certain charm about them.

Making You Work To Love It

Look, I can see why someone would play Epic Mickey for 30 minutes and say nope, I am out. This game has some problems and the problems are quite big ones that take a while to get used to and they are hard to ignore. To start with the camera is all over the freaking place and often will be in the wrong place at the wrong time. The platforming, mainly due to the camera can also be frustrating causing you to fall or miss your jump, often leading to a bunch of backtracking to get where you just were. These are problems that you really have to work hard to overlook, but if you can, you are in for a good time.

One Of The Best On The Wii!

Yeah, you read that right, Epic Mickey is one of the most stylish looking games that the Nintendo Wii has to offer. I just love this dark and twisted side of Disney, seeing the likes of Donald and Goofy in these weird steampunk robot style bodies is pretty awesome. The game also has some fantastic voice acting to move the story along as well. Not to mention that the soundtrack fits perfectly with the twisted places that you will be visiting in Wasteland. It is a real shame that this game remained stuck on the Wii and never got a HD remaster of any kind.

Even though, I will be the first person to admit that Epic Mickey is not a perfect game, I do not care, I love this game! the sequel is also very similar with the same problems that this one has (arguably even more) yet I like that game even better. I know that Epic Mickey is a hard game to love as it can be rather rough to play, but there is a good reason as to why those of us who were able to deal with the issues the game has love it! I love this game so much, I even have the paintbrush controller in my collection sealed and loose!
