False Dream

I came across False Dream by complete accident while lurking around twitch one night. I love a good horror game and this one had a really weird vibe about it that appealed to me. After being sold on it by the streamer, I added it to my wish list and then a couple of days later decided to take the plunge and check it out. At just a couple of bucks, I feel like I well and truly got my money out of this one. I am not sure I would play it again, but I more than feel like this was a worthwhile journey I went on!

Is This A Dream Or Is It Just Fantasy?

The premise of False Dream is kind of cool. We are basically stuck in a dream and while at first it may look like we are in a perfectly “normal” place. We soon start to notice that there are some very strange things here. We soon realize that we are not where we think we are, but if we can capture enough of these strange anomalies that are happening, we very well may be able to escape this place…. wherever the hell this is!

That Creepy Vibe That Keeps You Guessing

I would not say that there was anything that scared the hell out of me in False Dream, but there were certainly a few jumpy moments, especially when something unexpected would go down. The game is more about making the player feel uneasy and creeped out, you start to second guess yourself and I found that to be a great deal of fun. At the same time, I can see why this is a bit of an acquired taste. Actually, a friend of mine put it into context when he said that it is kind of like the game Exit 8. While I would not say that they are exactly alike, I do agree that if you enjoyed that game, you will probably also enjoy this.

Basic Can Still Creep You Out

The first time I saw that big plush thing that False Dream has, it took me by surprise! I will say that the game has a rather basic look to it, but everything is clean enough and I think that the nature of the visuals does mean that there are things that can catch your eye and make you think “Was that like that before or has it changed” it all adds up to a rather strange experience. Now, I have heard that there are some people who have had trouble with the visuals where they look odd or the game will not work properly, but I did not experience that during my time with the game.

Like A Young Fox Mulder!

Hey, were you a fan of The X-Files? Ok, so that may be a bit of a stretch as far as a comparison goes, but False Dream does have you trying to prove that paranormal things are going down. The game is played in the first-person and you need to explore the area you are in looking for anomalies, some of these are obvious like the creepy dude or something clearly being where it should not be. Others though are not quite as obvious and require you to do a little looking around and use your judgement. You need to snap pictures of the anomalies and if you get enough, you win. You snap the wrong things and it can be a game over. It is a rather basic game, but I enjoyed it and at just a few hours long, it does not overstay its welcome.

For a budget horror game, False Dream is something that is very easy for me to recommend. I more than got my money's worth with this game and I thought that the premise and the whole vibe of the game was fun and creepy. It never really scared me, but it certainly did make me jump on a couple of occasions. If you want a creepy horror type experience, you can do a hell of a lot worse than this!

Pros:

  • This is one of the better budget horror games I have played
  • I enjoyed the premise of the “dream”
  • Capturing these creepy things is more challenging than you would think
  • Overall, this was just a fun time from start to end

Cons:

  • I do not see any reason to play this again once you know where the anomalies are
  • It may not be jumpy or scary enough for some people
