I still can't believe, even with the plethora of fishing games on the market, how detailed these titles are when bringing the intricacies of the sport to life. Fishing Sim World: Pro Tour is another example of how much micromanagement there is behind a fishing career. The translation of those mechanics into this franchise is impressive.
Fishing Sim World: Pro Tour arrives as part of a series expanding the immersion factor into a pro fisherman's career. You'll build up your skills and compete against the world's finest, all to catch the most impressive fish and rank as the best in the business. It all sounds farfetched for anyone not aligned with professional fishing, leaving us to ponder whether it's even worth bothering.
Something's Fishy
Fishing Sim World: Pro Tour takes the casual element out of the sport, focusing on a competitive career mode that's a more authentic representation of the business. Players will aim to be the best angler possible, starting from the bottom and gaining the skills and knowledge required to compete against the world's best fishermen. It almost sounds like an RPG, but then we remember the core mechanics are catching fish.
Your fishing career will consist of the core gameplay reeling in over 100 types of fish in a graphically pleasant environment. You'll enter competitions, growing your earnings with sponsorship opportunities and social media followers, where ultimately, you'll level up to be the world's best. It's a surprisingly disciplined approach to the sport, where catching is challenging, and the off-water objectives create a bit of a storyline.
Even if you tire of the eventually repetitive career mode, you can try your hand at multiplayer, which is a different kettle of fish (excuse the pun). It's all customizable to create your competitions, games, and rules, where even those who aren't fantastic fishermen can build something enjoyable.
Plenty of focus on the real-world aspects of fishing makes Fishing Sim World: Pro Tour a particularly intriguing game to play. The mechanics are solid, the visuals are excellent, and there's plenty of diversity in gameplay. The only real issue is that the title will have trouble incentivizing non-fishermen to play the game, as nothing will pique their interest.
Teach a Man To Fish
But as a fisherman, is Fishing Sim World: Pro Tour set to trump genre classics such as Ultimate Fishing Simulator? Some nuances bog down the experience, such as the inability to move backward, eventual lack of challenge, and real-world representation of catching fish. However, as a whole, the title does justice to the sport as being a mighty-fine attempt at bringing the sport to life.
The career mode is solid, the controls are intuitive enough, and there's much more to do than sit around and wait for a bite. Any non-fisherman could enjoy what the game offers. Still, the reality is that it's a simulator for those more knowledgeable about the sport.
