FX Fighter Turbo

Recently, I had the opportunity to play a pre-release version of FX Fighter Turbo, the next generation of the original 3D PC fighting game. While it was still a beta version and had a few "undocumented features," I was able to get a good look at what the folks at Argonaut Software have in store for us next.

Although the plot is not radically different (this is a sequel, after all), gameplay has been enhanced and a variety of new options and features have been added. In addition, speed has been greatly enhanced (hence the "Turbo" designation), keeping FX Fighter up with the times. The game has a fresh new feel, and will attract both fans of the original and newcomers as well.

In addition to this, FX Fighter Turbo has two new characters to pummel (or get humiliated by), a bevy of new combos to learn and "teach" to your friends/enemies, and new detailed arenas. Also, the game sports new combat modes, special "bloodlust" moves, and better sound and graphics (can you say "goraud shading?" Most other PC fighting games can't without also saying "chunky"). This is not just an improved version of the original -- it is a whole new game, with new characters, moves, and effects.

Are you going to have to buy a new computer just to play this game? Probably not. The system requirements are as follows: Pentium 60 or greater, Windows 95, 8 MB RAM, 10 MB hard drive space, local bus VESA compliant SVGA @ 256 colors, SoundBlaster or compatible sound card.

Although you will not get 60 frames per second on the above machine, I found that a P133 ran just fine, even with all the detail modes turned up to the max. Get ready for some knuckle-cracking, spine-breaking action, because this game is due out in November. Until then, keep an eye open for our full review when the commercial version of FX Fighter Turbo is released.
