The King of Fighters 2001 and 2002 ports in this latest Playstation 2 disc set are faithful reproductions ' for better or for worse. The cult of the 2D fighting world is alive and well and this double disc set of the best in side-scrolling fighting will surely be a top pick among fans of the niche. Unfortunately, these games still look like the old 2000 and 2001 versions, which is exactly what Neo-Geo was aiming for.

Between the two discs you'll have 75 characters to pick from, a daunting task when you get down to it. The start-up and selection screens are classic arcade minimalism with little to look at other than the game modes and character selection. Both game discs do a wonderful job of recreating the original arcade experience, adding a fine touch here or there to bring-out what was good about the games when they were originally released and hiding what was bad.

Unfortunately the game designers decided to make players rely on the Playstation 2 controller D-pads to move your fighter and shoot-off the chained, high-speed combos that made Fighters so well received when it was originally released in the mid-90s. That means you can set the game up to use the left analog stick for controls. This creates a game that is generally easy to control, but that has a lot of issues when it comes to the finer movements usually associated with the special attacks and combos used by most characters.

The graphics are nothing to write home about, but neither were the graphics of the arcade originals. Instead of trying to polish up the games' looks, Neo-Geo decided to take the retro approach, opting to allow the games' controls and play to speak for themselves, and for the most part they do.
With the exception of the joystick set-up issue, both King of Fighters games handle very smoothly, allowing you to block, counter and combo with ease.

For the most part Neo-Geo has done little to mess with a winning formula - the only real add-ons are in game lists of special attack moves accessed by the start button and a Memory Mode that allows gamers to check out demos from previous KOFs.

While the King of Fighters series was a classic in its day and one of the first to use the tag-team approach, this game is really meant for the hardcore arcade gamer looking to relive their Arcade glory days in the comfort of their own home.
