The SCP Foundation is known for many things, but being a great workplace isn't one of them. Go Home Annie keeps showing us why some jobs are definitely not worth the paycheck, especially if they involve dealing with metaphysical entities. You know, maybe Annie should really think about getting a new job after the most recent containment breach.
Set in the always lovely world of SCPs, Go Home Annie is an unsettling first-person survival horror game starring another unfortunate employee from the world's least effective paranormal containment agency. This time, we'll explore a new division of the SCP Foundation – one that, as is tradition, doesn't exactly deliver the most efficient security measures.
Down the Rabbit Hole
As an employee of the SCP Foundation, Annie's daily routine involves dealing with paranormal events and interdimensional entities. For fans of Control, the bureaucracy of the SCP Foundation will feel almost refreshing. There's nothing quite like it in most survival horror games, and it's a welcome change of pace from the usual haunted houses or dimly lit forests – not that there isn't some of that in this game, mind you.
Unfortunately, Annie comes across the Replication Division, which, as it turns out, is part of a larger conspiracy within the Foundation. When all hell breaks loose, it will be up to Annie – and to us, of course – to put every entity back where it belongs. If SCP – Containment Breach taught me anything, though, it's that that's never an easy task.
Harness the Anomalies
Much like Control's Jesse Faden, Annie can use the power of the SCP anomalies for her own benefit. That usually means using SCPs as puzzle-solving tools in the Foundation's "Resident Evil" style secret lab. Fans of the SCP lore will also be pleased to know that some long-time favorites return in Go Home Annie – along with some new SCPs created exclusively for the game.
I had a blast exploring the SCP facility in this game. As labyrinthine as it might be, the level design never feels overly confusing. If you can navigate through Poppy Playtime without issues, you'll love the overall map design in Go Home Annie.
Spooky Places
The visuals in Go Home Annie are what I would call "adequate." You won't be blown away by mostly anything in this game. At the same time, there are certainly some indie titles that look considerably worse. For what it is, Go Home Annie's visuals are more than serviceable, and a notable step up from other indie horror games like Slender: The Arrival – though it's no Visage.
Still, this is easily the best the SCP Foundation has looked – and sounded. The audio design is top-notch, making the experience even more unsettling. The multiple takes on horror thanks to the many SCPs along with the gripping storyline at the center of it all make Go Home Annie one of the best SCP games I've ever played.
For fans of survival horror games, Go Home Annie delivers some genuinely unsettling moments tied together by a solid storyline.
