God of War: Origins brings back an original series that has been around for a long time. The popular games reared to life in 2005, and took the internet by storm. Kratos, the god himself, has muscle for brains and kills before he thinks, yet he’s surprisingly fun to play.

The game has made its way to three different gaming systems now, and the God of War: Origins Collection brings these two classics to the Playstation 3. If you loved other games in the series, such as the original God of War, or God of War 2, these additional games in the saga will be right up your alley. Of course, it isn’t tossed into Playstation 3 unaltered. High definition graphics and shiny new trophies to earn are all part of the new package.

Two games in one package

This title is actually two, Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta. Chains of Olympus follows Kratos for the ten years he is in service to the gods. The second, Ghost of Sparta, follows him as he visits the lost city of Atlantis. The games don’t have quite the same flash as today’s modern games do, but they are still enjoyable to play. The updated version also fixes an annoying navigation issue in the game, where you have to use the shoulder buttons to roll. This was unintuitive, and the PS3 version allows you to use the second analog stick. This makes it a lot easier to use, and makes Kratos more functional.

Improved graphics, same storyline

The graphics are greatly improved, with just a few areas in Chains of Olympus that they look stiff or odd when played on a giant TV screen. The rest of the time the new flare provided by the updated graphics is impressive to look at. While we won’t go into the details of the story lines itself for both games, if you’re looking for a deep plot or meaning to the game, Kratos Origins doesn’t have plot as its greatest strength. That doesn’t mean there isn’t any, or that the game is bad, but simply the developers strove to make the gameplay itself what keeps you coming back for more.

Annoying to switch between games

One tiny flaw with the package is that in order to play the other game in the package, you have to exit all the way out to the XMB to play a new game. It would be a nice touch if switching between games could be as simple as switching from a God of War Menu. This is a small problem with the game, and really one of the only few issues throughout it.

For those who loved playing this on the original playstation or other platforms, having these classics brough to PS3 is very exciting. While these old games may not have quite the flash as some of the newer games out there, bashing heads together as the mighty Kratos is still satisfying. As icing on the cake, these updated games are selling for a modest price, so even if you’re not certain you’ll like them it’s worth adding them to your gaming collection.

Pros:

  • Two games for the price of one
  • Enjoyable game play
  • Trophies to win

Cons:

  • Exiting one game for another is a pain
