Story and Setting

Halycon 6 is a simulation game that heavily relies on RPG elements for its storytelling and presentation. This makes for an interesting take on interstellar adventure. In this game, you truly get to live the life of a leader in the endless bounds of space. You’re in charge of your own space station following the destruction of your biggest ships by the deadly Chruul. In order to rebuild, you’ll need to form unlikely alliances with various factions around the galaxy. The presentation in this game can often feel similar to the world of Mass Effect as you step into the shoes of a leader.

In Halycon 6: Starbase Commander, the storyline is pretty surface level and generic, but that doesn’t make it unpleasant by any means. The diverse alien races and possible interactions are quite nice and it’s always interesting to see what might be coming up next.

Gameplay

While deciding to rebuild humanity’s control of space can feel daunting, there are some interesting ways this game nudges you in the right direction. The gameplay is based around managing your selection of trusted officers who you will need to build up and improve throughout your experience.

Gaining the right team is super important as you can acquire members that specialize in specific disciplines such as science, engineering or tactical reliability. They are recruited before joining, and you can use them as your primary way of engaging in the space battles that may come up. Fighting with the turn-based combat system is quite similar to games like Pokemon X and Y, but with space themed combat elements instead.

Most of your time while playing Halycon 6 will be spent within the endless bounds of space, as there are many battles to engage with. The enemy types are diverse with new alien races to find and figure out the best ways to address their presence determined by you.

Verdict

To ensure that you can keep track of everything going on around you, Halycon 6 has a management system that lets you see units of your fleet, resources, crew members, materials and dark matter. The resources are directly related to the upgrades within your Starbase. This leads to a chance of building better ships and recruiting more skilled officers over time.
