Small Saga

You need to check out Small Saga if you are into quirky indie style RPGs. This is an amusing and clever game that as I write this is getting really close to being fully released. You can head over to Steam and check out a free demo that showcases what you can expect when the full game drops. With a retro charm to the game and a fun turn based battle system, I am pretty sure that RPG fans (especially those who like classic RPGs) are going to just eat up what this is offering!

The Tale Of A Stolen Tail

The main character in Small Saga is a little rodent called Verm. The setting is below the streets of London where this big rodent civilization is and things are not quite what they seem. Think of something like Basil the Great Mouse Detective only with more of a Peaky Blinders edge and you will have an idea of what the style here is. Verm had his tail stolen by the Yellow God Of Death and now he is on a quest to get it back, but that leads him on an adventure that could shake the very foundation of what every rodent believes to be true!

Honoring The Classics

The gameplay of Small Saga is something I am sure many RPG fans are going to get a kick out of. From what I have experienced so far, the game is very reminiscent of the classic SNES era RPGs and that is meant in the most complimentary manner you could imagine. You can walk around this fascinating area, talking to characters, solving puzzles, and getting into combat. Combat is turn based and quite simple; you only have a few actions at your disposal so there is not a lot for you to have to worry about. I actually like how this is a tad scaled back as some RPGs just add mechanic after mechanic and it can become way too much.

Not Going The Disney Route

An RPG about a society of rodents that can talk, fight and do all kinds of other stuff could have gone for the cutesy approach. However, Small Saga did not go in that direction. Instead, what we have is a game that has a more serious look to it. The characters are “cute” to a degree, but they have a more serious look to them and everything is nice and clean. I do wish that there was more animation in the turn-based battles, but to be fair, this is the way many old school RPGs were with their battles. Still, it would have been awesome to see these cool sprites perform some more advanced actions during the battles.

Even though I must admit I have not yet had the pleasure to play the full game. Small Saga is still a game that I am very excited about and hold in pretty high regard already. I think that there are some great and clever ideas here with this whole small animal society and the story has me very intrigued in regards to where it will go. If you are into RPGs be sure to try out the demo and see why those who have played it are so high on the game.

Pros:

  • I love the whole idea of this little small animal world
  • The main character is pretty damn cool for being a little rodent
  • You get to add some interesting characters to your party along the way
  • It has a feel of a SNES era RPG and that is a good thing!

Cons:

  • The game is still just listed as “coming soon” on Steam
  • I wish that there was a bit more flash during combat
