Nintendo Indie World featured 19 new games in December 2021. Prominent among them was Sea of Stars, a new classics-inspired RPG set in the same universe as the underrated platformer The Messenger. The question from fans is: Will this be the next big hit-level indie game for Nintendo Switch?
It is estimated to arrive on consoles for Holiday 2022. But, there is no rush from the developers, Sabotage Studio, they are more interested in achieving a high polish, quality product, so it can change the estimated date. But, you can enjoy the latest trailer for Sea of Stars, where it highlights the game's combat, beautiful visuals, and soundtrack.
About the game
Sea of Stars is a classic inspired turn-based RPG. It tells the story of two Solstice Children who will combine the powers of the sun and the moon to perform Eclipse Magic, the only force capable of defending them from the monstrous creations of the evil alchemist The Fleshmancer.
It is characterized by:
Engaging turn-based combat Timed strikes, combat features multi-character combo attacks, power-ups, and a strategic blocking system that offers options to play around with different types of damage to hamper enemies while channeling powerful attacks or spells.
Crossing without shackles Swim, climb, jump, or lift ledges as you seamlessly travel the world with a navigation system based on the platformer experience that breaks free from classic grid-bound tile-based movement.
An adventure rich in history Dozens of original characters and story arcs will take you on a captivating journey. Sometimes epic, sometimes silly, and sometimes emotional. Sea of Stars does its role-playing game duty of exploring classic themes of adventure and friendship, while also being packed with unexpected twists and events.
A world you can touch There are many ways to hang out in the world of Sea of Stars. Sailing, cooking, fishing, stopping at a tavern to listen to a song, or playing the infamous board game known as "Wheels." Each system has been designed to deliver an experience that respects the retro classics while rethinking in some areas to deliver a seamless and modernized experience.
Dynamic lighting Lighting is 100% dynamically rendered, meaning things like day and night cycles, weather effects, eclipses, and blood moons all happen seamlessly, recoloring the world and faithfully rendering shadows.
As full-fledged solstice warriors, you'll eventually gain full control over the sun and moon, so if you just want to relax in your favorite area in the environment of your choice, you need to solve a complex puzzle related to lighting.
Sea of Stars is set in the same universe as The Messenger, though their stories don't seem to have much in common. The developers expect a game with four times the reach of The Messenger.
From a gameplay point of view, Sea of Stars is very reminiscent of Chrono Trigger, as battles take place from a similar perspective and party members can boost each other or combine their attacks. While the game is more like Chrono Trigger, the Sea of Stars website FAQ lists Super Mario RPG, in the hit system, and Illusion of Gaia as influences.
