Over the past couple of decades, Pokemon has come to dominate the video game space. With almost 80 titles under its belt, including spinoffs, you would think that the franchise would begin to slow down. However, the opposite is true, in that we get at least one new Pokemon video game every single year. While that’s great news for younger fans who are growing up with later generations of Pokemon, those of us who were there right at the beginning might be unable to keep up with the releases, being in our 20s and 30s and juggling family life with work, etc. Thankfully, those wonderful first few games from the Game Boy era are being kept alive with modified versions like Pokemon Ultra Violet. If you’re an older Pokemon fan looking to get a shot of nostalgia with a revived classic, here’s everything you need to know about Pokemon Ultra Violet.

Just How You Remember, But Better

Pokemon Ultra Violet is a “hacked” version of the original Game Boy Advance game Pokemon Fire Red, and it was created by single developer LockSmithArmy. It is modified so that players will be able to play through that classic Pokemon story on a single save file, all on their own, and still be able to catch every Pokemon. This on its own is a huge upgrade, because, in the past, several Pokemon were exclusive to one “version” of the game or another. For instance, in Pokemon Fire Red, you can find an Oddish in a specific area, while in Pokemon Leaf Green, the alternate version of the same game, that location will instead house a Bellsprout. Ultra Violet removes that barrier, effectively making the best version of Fire Red and Leaf Green.

Gotta Catch ‘Em All… Again!

Another benefit of Pokemon Ultra Violet is that LockSmithArmy continued to work on it after its initial release. As if having every Pokemon from Fire Red and Leaf Green, being able to obtain both the Kabuto and Omanyte Fossils, adding both Hitmonchan and Hitmonlee to your party after defeating the Karate Master Pokemon trainer, and even including Mew, LockSmithArmy went on to include an entire extra generation of Pokemon and new features in later updates. Update 1.20 added 4-Points Isle, a new island that players can travel to and collect EVERY third-generation Pokemon, bumping the number of Pokemon from 250 or so for gens one and two, to 385! That is a ton of Pokemon for a project being made by one person in their free time.

They also removed the evolution requirements that certain Pokemon had, where you needed to trade the Pokemon with an item in order for it to evolve, making every Pokemon and its evolutions easily attainable.

Pros

  • Almost 400 Pokemon to catch
  • Combines Leaf Green and Fire Red in the best possible way
  • Removes barriers to gaining every Pokemon evolution
  • Going back to the Fire Red/Leaf Green game is a huge nostalgia hit

Cons

  • Must be played on PC through a download
  • Newer players may not like the clunkiness of the older games
