Kidou Senshi Gundam Seed Destiny - Rengou vs Z.A.F.T. II Plus features a story mode with light RPG elements that follows the basic plot of the Seed Destiny anime. There are multiple routs to take and plenty of dialogue to enjoy as you relieve a basic, watered down version of the show in video game format. It’s fun and can give you a cliff notes style version of the story if you didn’t know it already. Gundam games, much like Dragon Ball games, tend to simply retell the same anime story over and over again in each new installment while rarely trying anything new. Seed Destiny overall is a good anime with a good story and the game captures it well in a decent enough branching path campaign that’s well worth a look.
Rengou vs Z.A.F.T. II Plus, like many of the other Gundam games, features a massive roster of mobile suits from the show to play as. All of the major fan favorites are included here such as the Strike Freedom, Destiny, Strike Noir and everything else you could want. Matches are 2v2 affairs where each mobile suit has a different cost attached to it that you’ll need to consider as you attempt to stay under the 1000 point limit for games. Going over can cause problems as the game tries to balance out each team so more power for the sake of it is not a good idea here. Each suit has its own unique signature moves so you can truly enjoy the pleasures of mowing down enemy combatants with your golden pylons and butterfly wings.
Gameplay in Rengou vs Z.A.F.T. II Plus revolves around fighting 2v2 matches in a wide variety of different modes. There’s a campaign mode and the regular multiplayer style matches where 2 players can team up to fight the AI. Sadly the game does not support 4 players so two characters must always be controlled by the CPU. Thankfully the AI is competent so you’ll never feel like it’s holding you back or causing you to lose undeservedly. There’s also a bonus third mode that functions a lot like the regular multiplayer but also allows further customization for rules and settings which is very fun to experiment with.
Sound & Ambiance
The game features the authentic soundtrack from the anime series so all of your favorite melodramatic soft j-pop songs are here to inspire you to destroy and win glory as much as they make you want to brood on the shoulders of your giant death machine. The drawback though is in the graphics department as the game has not aged very well at all. And it never really looked very good to begin with as it features bland, low polygon environments and terrain.
This game is all about competitive action and high impact adrenaline which will be sure to satisfy all loyal Gundam fans, guaranteed.
