King of the Hat

On October 21, one of the most interesting 2D platformers of the year hit early access. We're talking about the project King of the Hat. The game is created and distributed by a small indie studio, Hat Games. Originally, the developers were called Hyroglyphik Games, so why should we pay attention to it now? First things first.

What is it?

King of the Hat is a colorful two-dimensional platformer in the spirit of the classic 8 bit and 16 bit walkers. It is a multiplayer game in which the main task is to destroy the enemy's hat. And in a mode of confrontation with other users, it is important not only to deal with the enemy's headgear, but also to save their own. If the rivals do enough damage to your hat, the character will die. And passing the level will have to start all over again.

The developers planned to release the game back in 2020. However, the release had to be delayed for various reasons, including covid restrictions. As a result, it will be available in early access only by the end of 2022. There are also plans to release the game on Nintendo Switch. It is available in 12 languages, but only with English voice acting.

Fun battles with friends

The gameplay in King of the Hat is a bit like Grapple Dog, The Expendabros and even Team17's iconic Worms Series. At one location, 2 to 4 characters meet and fight. Battles are available both over the Internet, a local network, or on one screen.

Users choose a hero and go to one of the available arenas. There are currently 14 colorful characters in the game. Each of them has its own unique headgear and a set of special techniques with which to fight with opponents. This is not only a variety of options for close combat, but also special "magic" abilities.

To defeat your opponents, you must jump on their hat and destroy the soul stored in it. However, you must proceed with caution. During a prolonged attack, you risk losing your own headgear. The winner of the battle is the player who stomps the hats of all the opponents the fastest.

Advantages and disadvantages

Visually, King of the Hat looks quite simple. But behind the primitive two-dimensional graphics there is an explosive and addictive gameplay. Already at the stage of early access the project will please users with such interesting features as:

• Quick invitations of friends from Discord
• 14 diverse characters with their own unique features

The disadvantages are a small number of available arenas. Although the developers promise to fix this problem in the near future.
