Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole is a game based on the 2010 movie of the same name. One of the most interesting things the movie has going for it is that it was done by Zack Snyder. While this is based on a movie, it is also based on the books that the movie itself was based on too. I have to say for a tie-in to a kid’s movie, it is better than you would think… certainly it is not great, but it is not bad either.
No Noobs Allowed
When this game came out the reason that I picked it up was that my son was only four at the time and he enjoyed the movie so we thought that the game would be fun too. Well, Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole is based on parts of the movie, but it is also based on the books too. It introduces a new main character in Shard who is trying to clear his father's name all the while trying to save the day. The thing is, the game expects, no demands that you know the lore about this franchise going in! Even though we had seen the movie and got the gist of what was going on, much of it was still over our heads.
Talons At The Ready
When you see the gameplay of Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole, you will probably think that flight game is the best way to describe it, but I would say that it is more of an ariel action game than a full-on flight game. You have pretty decent control over your owl and you have two main attacks, a weak attack and a stronger attack for breaking shields/guards. It is fun to lock on to an enemy and then see our heroic owl zoom off and get them.
There are some pretty fun boss battles and a few spectacular set-pieces too involving turrets and picking up hot coal. I was worried that my son would not be able to play it as he had never played a “flight” game before, but it actually plays like your typical action game. Oh, and the fact you can beat this game in about four hours also means that there is little time to get bored with the gameplay mechanics! You do also have two special attacks, but you need to fill your prowess meter which you do by hitting enemies and doing dives.
Zack Snyder Flair!
The movie of Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole was a fun watch, but I have to say it was one of those movies that were more eye-candy than anything else. Actually, it was quite typical of what you would expect from a Zack Snyder movie. I think that the game adaptation captures the look of the movie pretty well. The characters look good and the different areas you will be flying in are quite exciting too.
I think that as far as kids’ movie tie-in video games go, Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole is not bad at all. It is far from being a great game and while it is short, my son seemed to enjoy the time he spent with this. The thing is, there is not much replay value at all and after he beat the game, I think he played it once or twice after and has never mentioned it again. I would say that if you watch the movie with your kids and they like it, then checking out the game is not a terrible idea.
Pros:
- I liked the visuals of the game
- They added in stuff from the books to the story
- For younger gamers, it is sure to be a lot of fun
- It has decent voice acting
Cons:
- You can beat the game in under five hours
- It expects the player to be familiar with the books as well as the movie
