Limbus Company

If you are someone who enjoys strategy RPGs that are rich with detail, then you might find new release from ProjectMoon, Limbus Company, to be intriguing. This new title puts you in the position of Executive Manager at the Limbus Company.

Here, you take a group of ‘Sinners’ and lead them into the old facilities of the Lobotomy Corporation. In here, you will face numerous objectives as you try and get your team through these derelict facilities and claim the Golden Broughs. Does it work, though? Is this free to play title worth investing some of your hard-earned time into?

An exciting new strategy RPG

First off, the art style and direction of Limbus Company is fantastic. This game takes a combination of real-time and turn-based combat and brings it into the one game for a rather breathless blend of fun. There are some visual elements that might remind players of something like Darkest Dungeon, though there is a clear difference in the art style.

The big difference in Limbus Company compared to games like DD, though, is the fact that both teams move at once during combat. The interesting weave of strengths and weaknesses can create some pretty chaotic battle scenes, so ensuring you have the correct skillset for each class is vital.

The skill chaining feature is a nice touch, too, adding a layer of strategy to your combat. Thanks to a rather simple control scheme, though, there is little difficulty in getting your group to pull off some very cool moves. All in all, Limbus Company looks to be a very promising strategy RPG that asks a lot, but not too much.

An intriguing follow-up to Library of Ruina (8/10)

If you are looking for a title that can build on Library of Ruina, what many believe to be the predecessor to Limbus Company, you should find it in spades here. Some, though, are turned off by the ‘gacha’ elements that are present in the game. The primary criticism would be that, in some phases, Limbus Company feels like a mobile game that grew more ambitious as it was developed.

The story is intriguing enough to keep you playing along, and the writing is humorous enough to remain interesting. However, it does lack the same ‘oomf’ as Ruina, though that could change as more content is added to Limbus Company. Overall, though, this is a very impressive follow-up to an already fine title.

There are some interesting issues with the mobile-like mechanics that might put some people off. The GaaS model is a controversial one, and it is hard to say so far whether or not Limbus Company going down this route is a good idea. Given it is a free, though, it is absolutely worth an install before you determine whether or not you will pay extra for some content.

Pros

  • Intriguing art style that definitely feels like it has its own aesthetic
  • Gameplay is fun, with an interesting battle system that keeps thing fresh
  • Enough content available to give Limbus Company plenty of hours of fun

Cons

  • Gacha-style mechanics might put some people off as they play this title
  • Probably needs some work on the UI, which can feel akin to a mobile game
