Luxor is one of the most addictive and fun puzzle games that I have ever played. It is a game that is so simple in its premise, but so addictive that it is the kind of game that you can play for just five minutes or a solid hour.
Wait There Is A Story?
Yeah, as weird as this sounds Luxor is a puzzle game that actually does have a story. The basics of it are that you have been tasked by Isis himself to save the pyramids and keep evil at bay. It is not the most in-depth story ever created, but I do appreciate that they actually made some effort to give you a reason to be doing what you are doing.
Walk Like An Egyptian
As well as the ancient Egyptian story that the game has, the whole game is themed like that. From the graphics to the sound and it all works very well. It has a kind of relaxing feel to it and that is something I do really like. It may not look that flashy, but it does what it does very well. I do feel that that the more modern versions of Luxor though have a bit more “flair” in the visual department.
If you have to put Luxor into just one category I would say “match three” is the way to go. Each stage has a kind of different layout, but the idea is the same. You have a series of balls that are making their way along a track and once they reach the pyramid, it is game over for you my friend.
Luckily you have a scarab that can shoot balls! The moving balls are all different colors and you want to make it so three of the same color touches. If this happens, those balls will disappear. This makes the chain shorter, but it can also lead to a chain reaction. You need to get rid of all of the balls and this is easier said than done. Each time you shoot a ball, a new one will go on the scarab, but you do not get to dictate the color of the ball.
The line of balls is always moving so you have to get your timing just right. Luxor can be pretty fast-paced so it can be tough to always get your aim just right. If you miss and the ball you shoot does not cause any to disappear, the ball you shot gets added to the chain!
I will fully admit that Luxor is not the most exciting game in the world to be talking about. However, this is a fun puzzle game that can be relaxing one second and then action packed and stressful the next. It may lack the flair of the games that followed it, but the original Luxor is still a fun time if you want a solid match-three style puzzle game.
- I like the Egyptian setting of the game
- It is faster-paced than you would think
- Easy to get into, hard to master!
- Tons of levels to play through
- You need a lot of skill to beat it
- The presentation is rather barebones
- The sequels are better
- PC compatible
- Operating systems: Windows 10/Windows 8/Windows 7/2000/Vista/WinXP
