Thanks to the 2000’s era, when one thinks of rhythm games it is very easy to fool yourself into believing that all these games are, are a means of pushing strange peripherals to gamers. However, long after the plastic guitars have been thrown in the trash, rhythm games live on and they continue to be an essential genre within the gaming industry. This is down to games that continue to push the boat out and strive to create games that don’t just pedal plastic instruments and endorse nineties rock bands. Today, we take a look at one such game which offers a unique rhythm adventure, Mad Rat Dead.
This game plays in some respects like platformers like Sly Raccoon, Crash Bandicoot and Klonoa 2: Lunatea’s Veil. However, it plays much more similarly to rhythm games like Parappa the Rappa, Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory, Thumper and Beat Saber. This is a super game that combines platforming, rhythm and compelling narrative. However, is this game up there with the best of the best in the genre? We find out in our review of Mad Rat Dead.
A Mad Old Dance
Firstly, let’s talk about the gameplay within this title. This game naturally asks the player to complete inputs in time with the music and prompts on the screen, that’s a given. However, what you choose to input is key to you clearing each stage. You will be able to control what platforms you hop to, when you dash and what attacks you use to take on enemies. So it’s up to you to make the right decisions and pick the right path, all the while, making sure you stay in time with the music. It’s addictive and it can get pretty challenging.
Then as for the visuals of this game, it plays like something lifted straight from Cartoon Network. The game represents itself in a zany and vibrant cartoon style which will read as obnoxious to some. However, if this is something that you enjoy, you’ll really appreciate the wonderful world, the awesome assets and the truly magnificent animations and stages that this game has to offer.
Then lastly, the story within this musical title. After dying as a result of a lab experiment, you are approached by the Rat God and given 24 hours to right your wrongs and die without regrets. However, this soon turns into a dark and twisted story of revenge. This leads to a long winded tale of cat and, well, rat and we promise you, the climax of this tale will keep you engaged right to the bitter end.
Overall, we have to say that while this game does become repetitive in terms of gameplay after an hour or two. We just can’t help but see the wacky charm of this game.
The visuals are vibrant and creative, the stages are challenging and fun for the most part and while the story is a little over the top, it’s well written and well-paced to make this short adventure well worth the price of admission. So if you are looking for a unique rhythm game option, Mad Rat Dead is the way to go.
