I grew up in Scotland, but have enjoyed the Madden games since the days of the Sega Mega Drive and I have to say that Madden NFL 13 is one of the most interesting entries in the series history! I know that sounds like a pretty big claim, but when you look back at the history of Madden games, this one had a lot going on. Not just in terms of the gameplay, but what the game was released for too.
Everyone Can Play!
As I said, the release of this game is very, very interesting. Madden NFL 13 was the last game to be released for the Nintendo Wii also, hopes for the Wii U were high at this time so EA even made the game for the Wii U, the only Madden game that console would receive. Interestingly, it was also released for the PlayStation Vita, again this would be the only Madden game that the Vita would get. I played the game on the PlayStation 3 back in the day, but it was also on Xbox 360 and even iPhone too. EA went all in with this year's Madden and it is interesting to see all the systems it was made available for.
I will admit that the previous year’s game felt like EA were treading water but with Madden NFL 13 they did make some significant improvements to the game. The most notable for me was the passing game. You felt like you had far more control over your quarterback and making split decisions was really awesome and very rewarding when it would pay off. The passing game here was the best that it had been in years and as a result, the game felt much more fluid.
If you get that Regular Show reference you and I can be buddies! Another change that EA made was improving the AI. This is done across the board in terms of how the AI will react on defense and on offense as well. The game was made with the (new at the time) Infinity Engine and it was very impressive what EA was able to do with this. It provided a more realistic challenge when playing against the AI which in the previous year's Madden game lot its appeal quite quickly.
Today On CBS
As you would expect from a Madden game, the presentation was fantastic in Madden NFL 13. They had the play by play team from the NFL coverage on CBS and they recorded a ton of new lines for this game. It is all done very well and the graphics at the time were done very well also. Granted, the Madden games have always been a visual spectacle and they seem to get better on a yearly basis, but for its day this was quite the looker. I think the new animations that they made this year greatly helped things on the field look more fluid and realistic. The only area where the game is lacking in the presentation department is the music, rather than having a licensed soundtrack it is all this instrumental garbage!
It is always hard going back and looking at an old sports game like Madden NFL 13, but I think this is one of the more interesting games. It is lacking some of the features that modern Madden games have, but I think this was a great effort when it was released and it was certainly an improvement from Madden NFL 12. If you are a game collector, I would advise that you consider getting the Wii U and Vita versions of this game as I have a feeling they could be sleeper rare titles as the years go on.
- The Infinity Engine added a great deal to the game
- I liked the new passing game
- The presentation as always was very well done
- It is interesting how this is the only Madden game on the Wii U and the Vita
- It has been surpassed by later Madden games
- There is no licensed soundtrack in this game!
