MECHANICA: A Ballad of the Rabbit and Mercury

If you enjoy cyberpunk style sci-fi then MECHANICA: A Ballad of the Rabbit and Mercury is the right game for you. Sure, it has a weird as hell title, but when you actually dive a bit deeper into what the game is about, the title actually makes complete sense and is exactly what the game is about. This is described as a JRPG, but without the emphasis on combat and that right there got my attention.

Down The Rabbit Hole Through Time

The game takes place in the distant future of 5029. MECHANICA: A Ballad of the Rabbit and Mercury is set on Mercury in the Japanese area that is known as Guillotine. The entire world is going to be destroyed in only three days! Our protagonist along with his mechanical maid that also happens to have bunny ears are trying to find out what causes the destruction and also stop it.

They are stuck in a three-day time loop and it is always a race against time to try and figure out who is responsible for this and what they can do to stop it. I am a huge sucker for any story that is about time travel and the fact that this has that and a cyberpunk setting is very cool to me.

Well, Hello There!

I love the art style that is going on here in MECHANICA: A Ballad of the Rabbit and Mercury. This is a truly lovely looking game; I love the world that they have created and the whole way the world moves and is alive as you move through each screen is just really well done. The game has a very anime kind of vibe to it and that is something I like and I do think that it fits the story very well.

This is an adult game so there is some lewdness here and that looks great! This game has some very impressive CG work and it is super hard not to be impressed. As well as being a game that is nice to look at, it has some great voice acting and a solid soundtrack too.

Music Is The Way Forward

The way that the game does not have the traditional combat you would expect in a JRPG is quite interesting. You are trying to gather information from people as you go about your business and try to stop the end of the world, but the word “ballad” in the title, MECHANICA: A Ballad of the Rabbit and Mercury is not just a gimmick. You actually play music for people and you need to do it right in order to progress the story and get the information you want.

While I think this is a very cool gameplay gimmick, they have not really shown much else yet in regards to what you can do in the game. You can explore, chat, and so on, but without combat, you do have to wonder if the whole music thing will be enough to keep your attention the whole way through.

There is no shortage of JRPGs being released in 2021, but I think that what is going on here with MECHANICA: A Ballad of the Rabbit and Mercury is very interesting. I love the setting, the premise of the story, and the lewdness that it has.

The whole music thing to get information is interesting and in the free demo that is on STEAM right now, you can get an idea of how the whole thing is going to play out. If you like JRPGs and want something a bit different, this is well worth a look.

Pros:

  • I like the bunny girl
  • The story is very well written and engaging
  • You can check out a demo to see if the game is for you
  • The presentation is just incredible

Cons:

  • Not sure how long the gameplay will stay interesting without combat
  • Also, not sure if the lewdness is necessary to the plot, to be honest with you
