Metal Slug XX is a port for a popular game originally designed for the Nintendo DS. This side scrolling shooter is now available on a number of different platforms, including PC and X-Box 360. The classic game is just one of over half a dozen in a long and popular series.
Above all, Metal Slug XX is known for crazy levels filled with non-sensical enemies. One minute you may have hoards of enemies to struggle against—the next may well have you mounting a robot ostrich to defend yourself against equally comical enemies.
In this game, you are fighting General Morden, who after the first level gains an army apparently waiting to save him. The next 6 levels are aimed at defeating that army with everything in your power—yes including that robotic ostrich.
Lots of Game Issues
Ports are usually revised and improved versions of the original game, so people can enjoy their old favorites with new content. Although Metal Slug XX does offer slightly improved graphics and a few new features, it is riddled with errors. The game often stutters, has severe FPS issues, and gives you a very narrow set of resolutions to choose from for the computer. The sound can also be warped on occasion, especially when the game is having FPS issues.
This is still an improvement from the past, where many people complained about the lack of customizable key bindings for the computer, making the game virtually unplayable for those without a joystick.
Very short game
Metal Slug XX comes with only 7 levels. You can beat them all in less then one hour on easy mode. The good news is, the game gives you 3 different levels of difficulty, and how long it takes you to play significantly goes up for each level of difficulty.
Even so, there’s not a lot of replayability after you have defeated the game. Metal Slug XX doesn’t offer anything particularly new or unusual compared to the rest of the series and is barely different from other old shooters like Contra.
Local Co-op only
The game is somewhat deceptive in suggesting the game offers online co-op, but it is local only. Who ever you are playing with locally must also have a copy of the game, making it that much harder to playt with others. Despite this, the ability to play the game with a buddy does make it more fun.
Metal Slug fans will likely enjoy this port of Metal Slug 7. Although the game has a lot of issues that render it difficult to play, it also has a lot of fun aspects to it too. The game can be either easy or challenging, played alone or with friends. This flexibility (and let’s face it, some of the hilariously ridiculous death animations) make it a fun little port to play. Although people outside the genre probably won’t love it, it’s worth giving a try if you like side scrolling shooters.
