Miraculous: Rise of the Sphinx

Based on the hit TV show, Miraculous: Rise of the Sphinx is an adventure game that puts players in control of popular super heroes, Ladybug and Cat Noir. Players collect orbs, talk with their friends, and explore the city in order to take down Hawk Moth, the infamous villain. All of this can be done playing solo, or with friends in a local co-op.

Unlockable content

Progressing in the game allows players to unlock new powers, develop current skills, and give you things like new music and clips from the shows. Depending on what you have unlocked, these will have to be retrieved from different places in the city, such as Master Fu’s or the Kwami Shop.

Low Budget Graphics

Miraculous: Rise of the Sphinx is billed as a high-budget game, but you’ll never be able to tell from the graphics. The “open world” is stunted and small, and some important destinations in the show either can’t be entered or have very limited access.

The graphics themselves look like they come from a $10 budget game. They lack detail, keep to a very simple palette, and aren’t especially sharp. This may be because the game is aimed at younger players, but even our youth deserve better graphics then this.

Voice Actors

On the flipside, the voice actors do make up for the poor graphics. The voice actors ring true to the show and do a good job of conveying emotion throughout the game. Although some of the dialog is a bit repetitive, this is one of the better parts of the game.

Some issues

Miraculous: Rise of the Sphinx is clearly meant to be played with controllers. In fact, the keyboard explanations in the tutorial don’t all work, aren’t intuitive, and there is no way to adjust the key bindings. This makes the game very hard to play if you’re not using a controller. On top of this, camera controls only allow you to zoom in and zoom out, making it hard to see some parts of the game. Finally for a premium priced game, this doesn’t have a lot of content. A fast player could speedrun it in just 2 hours. Most people can complete the main story in 4, and just a few more hours are needed to 100% the game. This is again likely due to the fact that it’s aimed at children, but even kids enjoy wandering around the game exploring. Miraculous - Paris Under Siege, the sequel game, seems to offer a lot more content and offers a better experience for a similar price.

The bottom line is Miraculous: Rise of the Sphinx is meant for small children. This is who the TV show is aimed at, and this is who will most likely be playing the game. It’s forgivable that the combat is simple and the gameplay is somewhat short.

• Superpowers. Megashield, spectacular kicking, stretching limbs
• Collecting. Collect glowing balls
• Beautiful map. Famous Parisian buildings brighten up the location
• Scary bosses - don't be scared and defeat them
