You'd be forgiven for thinking that Never BreakUp is a dating sim. The game is a - well - I'm not sure what it is. It's a title that seemingly dropped from the confines of the Chinese locality out of nowhere to offer some western release. It looks like a party game, but the initial visuals don't make much sense.
So even then, you've probably got as many questions as we do about Never BreakUp and why it exists. There are odd-looking characters, bizarre mechanics, and many elements that we're having trouble threading together. There's only one solution; we better play the game to figure out what's going on!
Makeup Until You Break Up
So after giving Never BreakUp a few whirls, we can confirm it is a party game! Things got a little lost in translation, being a game coming straight from the Chinese presses. But gameplay revolves around a series of challenges you can share with friends, where the individual or team scoring the most points wins the round. So what's happening here?
We can't even begin to divulge the narrative or lore behind the game, even though there's a story mode. All we can do is analyze the gameplay and let you know if it's fun or not. Players will take control of one of four oddball characters tethered together, being poised with a physics-based puzzle. Those range from climbing walls together to avoiding swinging mines.
Never BreakUp is a pretty simplistic party game, and we can't tell if this was done on purpose or if it's just attempting to ride the party game train. The lackluster visuals suggest the latter opinion. Each aspect of palatable gameplay seems to find a noticeable root in other popular party games. That's not to say the game isn't fun, but it's what we've seen before.
It's easy to lose interest in Never BreakUp. While the games provide some entertainment, nothing is happening that makes gameplay particularly engaging. It feels like a carbon copy of other minigames thrown into one package for the sake of a quick sale. Whether that's true or not, it's hard to tell. But we know the title won't strike it big with a Western audience.
Party Pooper
So is Never BreakUp a party game even worth an evening's effort? If you had other options, I'd say no. You're better off replaying the games it copies, like Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout, Overcooked, and Human Fall Flat. You might as well if you need something where other party games aren't available.
There's not a whole lot wrong with Never BreakUp as a game. It's that it gets bland very quickly, you have no idea what's going on, and visually you could probably assign it to an older console. Perhaps this is a developer portfolio game that would make much sense retrospectively. But bottom line, it's a title you can afford to miss.
