Panzer Knights is a World War II-themed strategic action game where you control a platoon of tanks to defeat enemy forces. The game offers a variety of historical battles and side missions to play through, with unique objectives for each battlefield. Players can unlock over 20 controllable tanks and upgrade their hardware to determine the best tank and loadout for each mission.
That all sounds a bit… mundane, doesn't it? That's why Panzer Knights introduces an army of cute anime girls to spice things up. This is precisely the kind of unexpected match that players love to see, even if it might lead to a bit of disappointment in this case.
Authentic(?) World War II Experience
The game offers detailed and attractive art styles for each of the tanks, and there are over 40 authentic WWII-era vehicles and artillery to encounter. Additionally, the game features a fully destructible environment, meaning players can destroy buildings, ram walls, and perfect their approaches to fighting. This feature adds an element of realism to the gameplay and enhances the overall experience.
Driving your tank around the map and bringing chaos to everything you touch brings back memories of Battlefield 1, only with more anime girls this time around. World War II has never looked this cute – and that's a sentence I never thought I'd write.
Bare Basics
One of the cons of Panzer Knights is that the game is too simplistic and lacks complexity. The game does not require proper positioning, movement, or aiming, and the AI is not very intelligent. Moreover, the game does not offer a tutorial that explains some of the most basic mechanics of the game, which can make it difficult for new players to learn how to play.
The game's lack of complexity is primarily due to the poorly designed AI system, which is extremely basic and lacks any advanced decision-making or strategic planning capabilities. The AI enemies and allies behave in a very simplistic manner, often just mindlessly rushing toward the player without much regard for tactics or situational awareness.
Embrace the Anime
Another downside of the game is the lack of interactions with the crew members. Although players can choose crew members that best suit their play style, the friendship system is limited, and there are no cutscenes or meaningful interactions with the characters. This can be disappointing for players who enjoy building relationships with their crew members in similar games like Valkyria Chronicles.
In a game that's focused on its anime girls, it's rather perplexing to see that they're just there as mere decorations. A more meaningful conversation mechanic would have made the game feel at least more "complete" than it is now.
Rating 8.5/10
Panzer Knights is a decent game but ultimately falls short when compared to other similar titles.
The lack of any meaningful interaction with its anime protagonists might be the straw that breaks the camel's back for die-hard anime fans.
