Peace, Death!

Strategy and management games are big among the indie community, whether it is thanks to how simple they tend to be or something else we are not sure. Titles that are apparently simple such as Papers, Please, or VA-11 Hall-A. Both of these games got really popular in their time, and they became something like cult classics. Peace, Death! Is another one of these management games with a small touch of arcade-style to the gameplay. But does this game have what it takes to be remembered? Or will it drown in the endless sea of indie titles released each year? Well, let's talk about it.

No big adventure

While it seems that games are constantly getting bigger and more massive, Peace, Death! Do not follow this. Lately, big video game companies aim for more content, complex mechanics, huge game worlds, or they go the other way around and make a movie you can play (we're looking at you Naughty Dog).

Peace, Death! Is one of those games that take a simple premise and add gameplay to it, and in many ways, it is pretty similar to that of Papers, Please. But instead of deciding whether to let people into the great country of Arstotzka, you play the role of Reaper. You're a starting employee of Apocalypse Inc, and you're working directly for Death itself. You get to assign whether the deceased shall go to Heaven or Hell.

You only start working there for seven days, and if you do well enough you just might get the job! So if you want to pay your bills and get something to eat, it's time to get some work done.

Simple enough?

The game itself is pretty simple and straightforward, you receive the soul of a mortal that just passed away. Once there you get to see a profile of the person's life, and with a basic set of rules and a basic moral compass, you choose their eternal destination. It starts pretty easy and it gets tougher as the days pass on, but of course, that's not all there is to the game.

There are some simple minigames included in there, so it’s not all just reading a profile and judging. For instance, you may be tasked with preparing a snack for one of the Four Horsemen of Apocalypse, or they can send you on a trip to get some souls that were mistakenly sent to Hell.

Peace, Death isn’t a game with tons of hours of gameplay, nor does it have a lot of content, but it’s a nice and small game. Probably what really saves the entire game is its sense of humor and great charisma. It is very cartoony and filled with jokes in pop culture references.

There aren't many incentives as far as story or replay value in this title, and it isn't very long either. You shouldn't get into this game expecting something big, but then again you probably weren't either. It's simple enough for anyone to finish, though as you progress it gets a little tougher.

One of the most annoying things in this title is they hire you a subordinate to help. It constantly messes up and makes mistakes you, later on, have to solve, and it will also affect your score, but it's part of the challenge of the game.
