If you love shooting guns, exploring colorful planets, and getting tons of upgrades, then this is the compilation pack for you.
Main Game Features
- 3 standalone action titles
- Dozens of unique sci-fi guns
- Mixture of third-person shooting and platforming
The Ratchet & Clank series follows two inseparable heroes, a furry humanoid creature named Ratchet and a tiny but supremely smart robot named Clank. Set in a fictional universe packed with lush alien planets, Ratchet and Clank's adventures send them careening through the galaxy, stopping at tons of interesting places along the way.
In the first game, Clank meets Ratchet and ropes him into a secret mission to stop a sinister businessman named Chairman Drek. This adventure has them meeting wacky characters as they explore the solar system, such as the goofy half-hero, Captain Qwark. Both of the sequels expand the universe in some cool ways, offering straightforward yet compelling stories with a lot of sci-fi humor. Although the jokes can be juvenile at times, the Ratchet & Clank franchise is one of the best and most lighthearted series for sci-fi fans.
While the Ratchet & Clank narrative is great, the thing that sets this series from other PlayStation 2 action games is the explosive gameplay. Especially in the first game, the series offers a mixture of classic 3D platforming and hectic third-person action. This includes both shooting and melee gameplay, with a big emphasis on discovering new weapons and upgrading them. As you explore different planets in a somewhat linear fashion, you'll find new items that let you access secret areas, solve puzzles, and more. Levels are often packed with goofy and cartoonish enemies, which you must blast down with your favorite weapon. Destroying enemies and things like crates yield collectible bolts, which can be used to buy newer weapons or upgrade your existing ones.
The first Ratchet & Clank is an excellent foundation for some really cool gameplay ideas, new mechanics, and wacky guns. The sequels, Going Commando and Up Your Arsenal, put a bigger emphasis on action and shooting over puzzles and platforming. Levels also get bigger and new hub areas are added, encouraging players to explore their surroundings and experiment with new weapons. Most weapons level up as you use them, so the more fun you have blowing up enemies, the better your weapons become. Up Your Arsenal also introduces vehicle-based sections, with some competitive multiplayer to boot.
Overall, the Ratchet & Clank Collection is easily one of the best game compilations around. For existing fans, the remastered graphics and smooth framerate make it easy to enjoy all three games again. Newcomers to the Ratchet & Clank franchise will surely fall in love with the chaotic action and upbeat storytelling.
