Remorse: The List

Isn't the idea of getting a list of tasks to complete great in an open-world survival horror game? We don't have to figure anything out for ourselves, and we can get on surviving without much effort or thought. The trouble is that the list in Remorse: The List makes absolutely no sense. You're the one that's going to have to decipher what's going on in this mystery-shrouded town.

Remorse: The List bills itself as a classic survival horror game. What that entails amongst a backdrop of the weird and wacky is yet to be seen. But there's one thing that you can agree upon before gearing up to play: the setting and concept of the game look downright terrifying. Shall we prepare for some horror-infused action, then?

This Ain't No Grocery List.

You'll figure out pretty quickly that your list isn't any old shopping memo. It's a list that becomes the game's core focus, hence the title, Remorse: The List. The text is trying to tell you what's happened to this quiet little Hungarian town. You can see that it's been ravaged by horrors that make up the stuff of nightmares. And guess what? They're after you now!

That's where the 'classic' survival horror mechanics come into play. You'll be fending off ethereal creatures and grotesque effigies. At the same time, you explore the town and piece together the fate of the residents. It sounds like pretty standard survival horror, so is it thrilling to engage with?

Remorse: The List doesn't offer anything outstanding mechanically. There are puzzles to solve, enemies shoot, and limited inventory to manage. However, the most significant engagement factor comes from the fabulous visuals that make up this devastating Eastern European town. The environment's violent features, paired with the gothic architecture, set a truly terrifying scene.

Horror fans would get a thrill from the numerous scares and the heart-pumping anxiety certain situations provide. Even as an open world, Remorse: The List feels pretty railed. You can accomplish objectives in any way you see fit. Still, they all ultimately lead to the same outcome in the storyline.

'Hungary' for More

So how does Remorse: The List holds up in the survival horror scene? Well, it's nothing revolutionary, but that's not to say the game isn't good. The title feels like one of those Friday night movies you'll pop in, get a bit of a scare, acknowledge it did its job, and that's the end. You won't be hugely impressed by the game, but it delivers everything you'd expect for a survival horror game.

It doesn't have the explosive cinematic feel that similar games like Resident Evil: Village have, but it's worth playing. The well-designed environments and horrific presentation alone deliver the thrills and scare you'd expect from the genre. It'll satisfy your scary game itch, but it won't amaze you.
