Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals is a game that I am really hyped about. I played the hell out of the original game on the Nintendo Switch (it is available on pretty much everything) it was a fun sci0fi side scroller and now it is back with a full-on sequel that looks even better than the first game. As I write this the game does not yet have a release date, but I thought it would be fun to take a look at the game and see what looks exciting about it.

Mysterious Transmissions From The Past

We actually know very little about the story Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals is going to tell us. What we do know is that the story is set five years after the events of the first game. The storytelling in that first Oxenfree was truly great and felt like you were taking part in a fun adventure/sci-fi/ghost story kind of special. Riley who is a new character, heads back home to where she grew up, Camena and there are all these strange radio signals, she decides to investigate them and ends up on one heck of a strange adventure.

Telling A Story The Right Way

One of the things that are going to set Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals apart from other similar styles of games is the way that it tells its story. The original game was all about the player experiencing the story through gameplay, with no big interruptions and long-drawn-out cut scenes. There was (and will most likely be here too) a lot of dialogue and storytelling, but it feels way more immersive due to the way it is presented to the player.

Opening A Door

To be honest with you as I write this, we actually know very little about the gameplay of Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals, but it does look like it is following on from what the first game did. This is a 2D adventure game where we play as Riley and have to explore, talk to people, solve puzzles and figure out what is going on. From the teaser trailer, we can see that she can use a radio to try and interact with a radio signal which appears to open some kind of portal or door. You will get various choices to make as you play in what you do and what you say which like the first game, should mean that there will be multiple endings to experience.

Even though details are very thin on the ground in regards to Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals I still think that this looks like one of the most exciting 2D adventure games that is coming out this year. The first game really did tell a wonderful story and this one looks like it is following that trend too. If you like adventure games and games that have a strong story, be sure to keep an eye on this.

Pros:

  • I really like the direction that the story is going
  • The 2D visuals are fantastic, especially those weird radio effects
  • I am very interested to see how the radio plays into the gameplay
  • It looks like the story will once again have multiple endings

Cons:

  • We do know very little about the game so far
  • Will any characters from the first game show up here?
