The new Resident Evil Village Winters’ Expansion is a huge new addition to the storyline of the original game. The new expansion offers several new features, including a new storyline, the ability to play in third person mode, and new characters for the Mercenaries mode.
There’s a generous amount of new content for this expansion, so if you’re excited to see what is offering in this new expansion pack, here’s what you can expect.
New Storyline Shadows of Rose
The new winter expansion offers a short new storyline segment offering a fresh look on the Village storyline. It focuses on Rose Winters, the daughter of Ethan Winters. In the story, Rose Winters is sick of magical powers and just wants to be a normal teenage girl. She thinks that communing with the Megamycete will help her achieve that goal. Instead, she is forced into another world made up of all the memories of people who have come near the megamycete in the past. This DLC covers that time period.
Third person perspective makes it less scary
The developers of the series, Capcom, have been struggling to decide between whether they are an action game or a horror game. This indecisiveness comes in part from the perspective chosen in the game. In Resident Evil 4 for example, the third person perspective was used to emphasize the combat side of things.
They later tried to lean towards the horror and insecurity of the storyline in Resident Evil 7: Biohazard with a first person perspective, which has carried over to this latest expansion pack.
Although Resident Evil: Village was played in first person, this new expansion delves once again into third person. Third person is less frightening because the horrible things you see are happening to a character on the screen—not to ‘you.’
Although it is less scary, it’s still worth playing. The storyline is unique and interesting, and the new perspective offers a new take on the story.
Jumpscares and Puzzles
This is a fairly short expansion, with just 3 hours of playable content in it. While it is short, there are a few things of note in it. The game offers you a few new puzzles to solve, and here and there are a few jumpscares to give you some chills.
Mercenaries mode has also been expanded by 2 or 3 new stages as well as some new characters. These are modest changes but welcome if you loved the original game.
Resident Evil Village Winters’ Expansion isn’t revolutionary, but if you’re a fan of the original game and want to see more it is worth purchasing. The new expansion offers a modest amount of content, including storylines and additions to the games other modes. While it’s not a huge amount of content, it does make the game more fun and adds to the enjoyment of the original Resident Evil Village.
Pros:
- A modest amount of new content
- Perfect for Resident Evil Village fans
