November 4th was a landmark day for players of the classic game, Stardew Valley. On this day, the update that has been available to PC players since March, reached players on Mobile devices and Switch as well.
The long awaited update was postponed for Switch and Mobile due to some bugs that needed to be worked out, but is now finally available. Here’s just a few of the features in the new update.
Winter Outfits
For the past decade, the townsfolk of Stardew Valley have been wandering around in their one and only outfit in every single season. Short sleeves make sense in the spring, summer and even fall perhaps, but not when there’s a thick blanket of snow on the ground. Thankfully, the new update gives all of the NPCs in Stardew Valley a winter outfit, so they don’t have to look so—well—cold during the winter months.
New Dialogue
Although ConcernedApe, the developer of Stardew Valley, did a remarkable job on the dialogue, there have been a few notable bugs. One of the biggest is that one of the characters, Abigail, will says, “Hey, how’d you know I was hungry? This looks delicious!” when gifted with a liked item—even if that item is a quartz.
This was fixed in 1.6, and a ton more dialogue was added. Characters remember that you won or lost the fishing derby now, and have many more new phrases to change things up. Shane in particular, has a few dialogue phrases now that make him sound less angry and more depressed. These are very helpful in making him a bit more relatable in gameplay.
New Items
Lots of new items were added as well, with the most exciting one being the Dehydrator. In past updates, players were restricted to making jelly, wine, or meals with their produce. The new update gives them a fourth option, with a number of new items spawning from this new device.
This in itself is a huge update, but on top of this the game added a new winter seed items, found through digging artifact points, and the addition of new books. The books can help players get new skills such as the ability to run faster, have more defense without the need for food or items, and skill ups for things like fishing or mining.
Another amazing new addition is the prize tickets, redeemable at Mayor Lewis’ house. These prize tickets are an award if you’ve already gotten the custom item for winning an event, making winning future easter egg hunts or fishing derbies worthwhile.
New Events
There’s also new events for the game such as Squidfest, where players have to catch as many squid as they can within a certain time period. These don’t rob the player of an entire gameday like the traditional ones, but do add something to the game.
Stardew Valley has easily been one of the most relaxing farm sims of all time. Garnering rave reviews from players to top review sites, there’s good reason to love this game. The new update once again receives top reviews, because it manages to make the game so much better with the sheer amount of quality of life enhancements and new content available.
