Rancher: A New Life is a farming simulation game in which players can take on the role of the new owner of an abandoned ranch. There isn’t much of a plot; the game essentially revolves around rebuilding your own farm. The game’s main distinguishing feature is that it feels as though it’s made up of several different simulations. First, of course, is the vegetable garden and farming. Second is raising animals—both large and small livestock. Third is the workshop, where you can craft items to make your life more comfortable, ranging from birdhouses to furniture. The fourth is a car simulator, where you can fix up an old car and take it on speedy trips into town for shopping. The fifth (my favorite) is a pet simulator—you can get a dog and train it by teaching it various commands.
